Target: Larry Page, Google CEO
Goal: Stop Google from funding policies that hurt minorities, the poor, and the environment.
The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) has become known as one of America’s most socially irresponsible corporate lobby groups. ALEC works at the state level to promote policies that include disenfranchisement of minority voters, rollbacks to clean energy laws, privatization of education and healthcare, and controversial “Stand Your Ground” laws that encourage a shoot-first approach to gun use. ALEC produces templates for pieces of ready-made legislation designed to support these misguided policies, and ALEC lobbyists work to sell these templates to state legislators across the US. ALEC has been credited with helping to pass some of the most anti-poor, anti-minority, and anti-environment state laws in the country.
In a move that can only be described as baffling, Google recently joined ALEC. Given that the Internet giant has branded itself as a socially responsible, green-minded company, Google’s willingness to pay dues to ALEC would seem to be ironic at best. Google’s move is especially surprising, considering that more than fifty companies have actually cut ties with ALEC over the last few years, in many cases due to concerns about the lobby group’s legislative priorities. Companies as diverse as Coca-Cola, Walmart, Amazon, and General Motors have all dropped out of ALEC or declined to renew their membership.
If Google wants to be known as a socially responsible company, it cannot possibly do business with an organization like ALEC. Sign this petition to tell Google CEO Larry Page that it’s time to quit ALEC, and send a positive message about Google’s priorities.
Dear Mr. Page,
We, the undersigned, call on Google to immediately cut all ties with ALEC, a corporate lobby group linked to pushing truly abhorrent state legislative agendas. ALEC promotes state-level policies that prevent people from voting, discourage clean energy, and encourage a shoot-first approach to gun use. ALEC develops and pushes state legislation that is anti-minority, anti-worker, anti-poor, and anti-environment. ALEC’s extreme agenda threatens millions of Americans’ access to a healthy environment, safety in their communities, and basic democratic freedoms.
Are these the kinds of policies Google wants to be associated with? We think not, and we hope you will respond to the concerns of thousands of your customers by immediately dropping your ALEC membership. More than fifty US companies have already left ALEC because of the lobby group’s controversial agenda, and it is time for Google to follow suit.
Google has built itself the reputation of being a company that cares about people and the environment. Please don’t squander this reputation by associating with a lobby group like ALEC. We urge you to cut ties with ALEC right away, and show the world that Google is still committed to social responsibility.
