Stand With Martha Stewart: Ban Pig Cruelty

Target: Members of the New Jersey Legislature

Goal: Override decision to allow gestation crates in New Jersey

When Governor Chris Christie (R-NJ) vetoed a bill that would ban cruel gestation crates in the state, many were shocked. The bill that had passed the state Assembly by an overwhelming vote of 60 to 5, then passed the state Senate by 29 to 4 was proposed in vain. After hearing from biased pork interests, Christie acted in opposition to the majority of the state and thwarted the bill. His actions, however, did not go unnoticed by television personality Martha Stewart, whose hometown is Jersey City, and she is taking action.

Martha Stewart is now calling on lawmakers in New Jersey to override Christie’s veto and enact a ban on gestation crates.

Stewart claims the crates are an “inhumane practice” and wrote a letter to the Office of Legislative Services, claiming that the bill is necessary to lessen the prevalence of cruelty against pigs in the state. “These animals have committed no crime,” she wrote, “yet they’re treated worse than even the most violent criminals would be treated. No prisoner…is kept in a cage so small he can’t even turn around for months on end.” She called it torture, and she is right.

While most understand that pigs are highly intelligent creatures that never deserve the cruel treatment they are subjected to inside a gestation crate, Governor Christie seems unmoved by the facts. When hog farmers argued that these torture chambers are the cheapest method of raising pigs, and that they are somehow beneficial for their health, the governor bought it. In addition, the farmers claimed that they wanted “total control over the animals’ upbringing,” and so Christie once again satisfied industry demands over basic animal welfare.

Stand with Martha Stewart and sign this petition urging New Jersey lawmakers to override Gov. Christie’s insensitive decision to allow animal cruelty to persist in the state.

Dear Members of the New Jersey Legislature,

Recently, you received a letter from Martha Stewart, a popular American figure and a native to New Jersey, requesting that you override Governor Chris Christie’s decision to veto a bill that would ban gestation crates in the state. It is perplexing that, given the state population’s overwhelming disapproval for this practice, it is allowed to persist because one man decided to serve the interests of industry at the expense of animals.

Most Americans oppose gestation crates, as does the Humane Society of the United States and numerous other local animal welfare groups, as Stewart notes in her letter. I urge you to heed her request and work towards making gestation crates illegal in New Jersey. They are senseless instruments of cruelty, and no creature deserves to suffer by them.
