Applaud Family’s Donation to the Hungry that Spurred Idea for Annual Event

Target: Carol and Willie Fowler

Goal: Thank this family for turning a cancelled reception into a chance to do good

When their daughter Tamara got engaged, hard-working parents Carol and Willie Fowler did their best to provide a stunning reception at an upscale restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia, complete with four courses per guest, hors d’oeuvres and dessert, plus place settings of crystal and gold. When Tamara called off the wedding, they steeled themselves to lose a hefty deposit. But the next morning, as Carol began the process of cancelling the arrangements, Willie stopped her, saying, “No, what we’ll do is donate it to Hosea Feed the Hungry,” as she told ABC News. According to Care2, Tamara and her brother had volunteered for Hosea Feed the Hungry when they were younger, and a representative for the organization even initially believed the call was a joke; “It’s a very creme de la creme wedding venue, so to say that you’re going to host 200 homeless individuals at Villa Christina — it sounds like a prank call,” said Quisa Foster.

Then the Fowlers met with CEO Elizabeth Omilami to hammer out the details of having 200 Atlanta people experiencing homelessness bused to the venue for the meal and entertainment, including a clown and face-painting. At the reception, Foster commented, “You go to weddings sometimes and you see a lot of people really waste food…we take so many things for granted. These clients or guests, as we call them, they don’t.” The family, Tamara included, was so happy to see the reservation used and appreciated by so many deserving men, women, and children, that they decided they’d like to secure sponsors to help them hold an annual event called “The Fowler Family Celebration of Love.” Carol came away from the experience with the following revelation: “If you have cancelled an event, do not walk away. Pick up the phone and call your favorite charity and offer it to them. We’re regular, working people and anybody can do this. This is not star stuff.”

By signing this petition, you are thanking the Fowler family for choosing to look on the bright side of their daughter’s canceled engagement and using it as an opportunity to spread some cheer in the lives of their less-fortunate neighbors. You are applauding them for coming up with a creative fix for what could have been a disappointment and setting an example to others who don’t want to waste a similar opportunity.

Dear Carol and Willie Fowler,

I was so inspired to read of your recent donation of a stunning reception dinner to your neighbors in Atlanta who are experiencing homelessness. You managed to find the positives in what could have been a disappointing situation, and to coordinate a wonderful evening for your family and others.

Thank you for finding such a creative solution to the reception that you no longer needed. I imagine many families struggle with a similar problem every year, and instead of wasting the deposit money they now have an example of compassion and generosity to follow. Thank you for using your kindness as an opportunity to offer a lesson to other Americans on how to treat their less-fortunate neighbors.
