Stop Stray Dog Cull

Target: Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta

Goal: Keep thousands of stray dogs from being euthanized in Romania

The constitutional court in Romania recently passed a law that will allow stray dogs to be euthanized is now law. Thousands of protestors, actors, politicians, and animal rights supporters have since congregated around parliament, hoping to reverse the decision. A cull such as this would result in the unnecessary deaths of thousands of dogs each year and must be stopped.

The new law is largely a response to the recent death of a four-year-old boy who was mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs. Rather than using the terrible accident as a watershed to implement new strategies for managing the stray population, Prime Minister Victor Ponta used it as an opportunity to call for a cull, which he had already been pushing for. Under the law, even if stray dogs make it into shelters they can be euthanized if not claimed within 14 days.

Romania does have a significant stray dog problem. In Bucharest alone there are an estimated 65,000 roaming the streets. Much of the blame for these excessive numbers belongs to former communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu who in the 1980s tore down large housing districts in order to build apartments. As a result, many residents in Bucharest were forced to abandon their dogs.

Not only is this new law cruel and unnecessary, it will also prove ineffective. Numerous studies have shown that euthanization is not a successful means of dealing with an overwhelming stray animal population. This is because euthanization doesn’t deal with the real problem—reproduction. Sterilization programs have proven to be far more successful in reducing the numbers of stray dogs within a community because they keep the numbers from growing.

Please sign the petition below and demand that Romania reverse this law and prevent the unnecessary slaughter of thousands of stray dogs.

Dear Prime Minister Ponta,

Romania recently passed a law making the euthanization of stray dogs legal. While it is true that Romania has an overwhelming stray population, a mass slaughter is an incredibly cruel and unnecessary answer to the problem.

I demand that you reverse this law immediately. A cull will never be a solution. Only the implementation of a sterilization program will help reduce the number of stray dogs in Romania. It will also do it without violence.
