Target: Guido Barilla, Chairman of Barilla
Goal: Reprimand Barilla Pasta for not allowing gays in their advertisements
The chairman of the Barilla pasta company, Guido Barilla, recently made a statement that he refused to use gay people in his advertisements. His explanation was that it was important for the company to maintain its “classic family” image. Since the statement, many activists, particularly in Italy, have begun to boycott the brand and the hashtag “boicottabarilla” (boycott barilla) became a trending topic on twitter in Italy.
Supporters of gay rights around the world should do the same and boycott the company, shifting their pasta purchases to more accepting and open-minded companies. In response to the boycotts, Guido Barilla stated that if gay people did not like his policies they could “eat another brand”. Guido Barilla has a right to choose who he has in his commercials, but if he chooses to discriminate against gays, he should be aware that gays and supporters of gay rights will discriminate against Barilla. With gay support growing around the world, Barilla will have to accept that after this statement, many consumers, not just gays, will be eating another pasta brand.
Sign the petition below to agree to no longer consume Barilla, but instead give your business and support to companies who are accepting of gays:
Dear Guido Barilla,
Your recent statements regarding your company’s refusal of to use gays in your advertisements have offended many people. As you know many Italian activists have boycotted your product, and now the boycott is spreading across the world.
Unless your statements and regulations are rectified to not discriminate against gays, then your product will substantially lose sales. We will instead be shifting our consumption to brands that are supportive of gays and all types of families.
