Target: Jeffrey Prang, councilmember and initiator of the ban
Goal: Commend West Hollywood for banning the use of exotic animals in entertainment
West Hollywood has been a key player in the animal rights movement. The city has banned real fur on clothing items, cosmetic testing on animals and now the use of exotic animals for entertainment purposes. West Hollywood is lead by compassionate individuals who understand the importance of treating animals with respect. Because it is such a major city, Hollywood’s stance on animal rights is very important.
Many exotic animals are included in the ban, such as bears, giraffes, kangaroos, armadillos and badgers. Many abusive animal activities are becoming illegal as well: carnival performances, parade participation, and trade shows. Basically, anything that forces the animal to perform for a human audience is now illegal. Some wild animal representations are still legal, such as the display of a wild animal for educational purposes; the observation group must be kept to twenty people or less in order to not put stress on the animal. Animals are also still allowed to be in licensed movie productions due to efforts already in place to ensure humane treatment on set and behind the scenes.
West Hollywood has been an important advocate for animal rights for decades. Along with the ban on cosmetic testing and the use of real fur on clothing, the city has placed a ban on declawing felines and on selling animals in a retail setting. West Hollywood has gained the favor of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and animal lovers everywhere. Applaud the individuals responsible for ensuring that animals of West Hollywood have rights.
Dear Councilmember Jeffrey Prang,
Recently Councilmember John Duran and you advocated for the ban on using exotic animals for entertainment in West Hollywood. Animal rights have been an important part of West Hollywood’s history; you have made the city of West Hollywood and many people around the country thankful to have you on the council committee.
Since the ban on cosmetic animal testing in 1989 West Hollywood has been a positive force in the fight for animal rights. Because of the ban on using exotic animals for entertainment purposes, bears, giraffes and armadillos, amongst many other fortunate species, are spared the abuse of performing for humans. I understand that some exotic animal displays, such as those for education purposes, are still legal for a small group. I urge you to stand by this ruling and ensure that there are no individuals or organizations abusing this strict rule.
Thank you for standing up for animals, and ensuring that they have rights. You have won the support of many animal lovers and animal rights organizations. Please continue to be a strong voice for animals.
