Applaud West Hollywood For Banning Fur Sales

Target: West Hollywood Mayor Abbe Land

Goal: Thank West Hollywood City Council for disallowing the sale of fur products

West Hollywood, California, home to the famed Sunset Strip, has officially placed the country’s first ban on retailing furs. Under the ban, stores in the district will not be allowed to sell products containing the fur of any animal. This sets a good anti-cruelty example for other cities, and pressures designers to make fur-free clothing lines that can be sold in the area’s heavily visited shops.

Slaughtering animals for their furs is cruel and unnecessary with all of the synthetic or plant based imitation fibers available on the market. Animals can suffer greatly at the hands of fur traders, in most cases being raised from birth to be killed. Foxes, minks, raccoons, and other animals are often kept in small, barren cages with inadequate water and often nonexistent medical care. Mother foxes in the fur trade have even been known to cannibalize their kits, as their cages lacked safe hiding places.

The new law will force many West Hollywood stores and designer boutiques to take fur clothing off the shelves, or risk a hefty 800 dollar fine. It will also restrict the import of furs by retail sellers. The desire for real fur is expected to lessen as shops set their focus to fashionable yet humane alternatives.

The fur ban comes shortly after the city’s ban on live animals in entertainment. They have also abolished the retail sale of cats and dogs in pet stores, as well as pushed for more humane treatment of egg-laying hens in California. These, combined with West Hollywood being the first city to ban de-clawing of animals, mean that the city is well en route to reaching their goal of being the “humane capital of the nation.” Your signature will thank the West Hollywood City Council for upholding an excellent record of kindness and respect towards animals.

Dear West Hollywood Mayor Abbe Land,

Recently, West Hollywood has banned the retail sale of fur products. This will result in many fur items being taken off the shelves in the city’s busy shopping area, in favor of more humane synthetic options.

This is not the only step that West Hollywood has taken to promote kindness to animals. A ban has been placed on live animals performing for entertainment, and another on the de-clawing of pets. The sale of live dogs and cats in West Hollywood pet shops has been disallowed. Finally, West Hollywood has been a strong advocate for a proposition that ensured more humane treatment of hens by the egg industry.

Thank you for your ongoing efforts to set positive examples for compassion to animals. The ban on fur sales will encourage more conscientious shopping as well as compassionate designing. West Hollywood is well on it’s way to becoming the most humane city in the nation.
