Target: Sister Angelique
Goal: Applaud Sister Angelique for her humanitarian efforts in rehabilitating victims of Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) violence.
Sister Angelique has provided hope to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). She is trying to restore some normalcy and continuity to the lives of a lost generation of people. The population has been terrorized for decades by the militant, religious fanatical group known as the LRA. They have committed countless atrocities including murder, rape, kidnapping, mutilation, forced labor, and recruitment of child soldiers and sex slaves. Fortunately, the LRA is now on the run and being dismantled by the African Union military forces. Although the LRA is waning in relevance, other areas of the country are still occupied in a seemingly endless ethnic, political armed conflict.
Angelique’s mission is to rehabilitate the survivors, who have been displaced from their homes and witnessed or experienced the horrors of the conflict. Angelique is no stranger to the violence. She was displaced by the violence in 2009, which motivated her to help others in need. There are currently a staggering 2.6 million displaced civilians in the DRC.
In 2003 she created an organization called Mama Bongisa in Dungu, which is located in north eastern DRC. “Mama Bongisa” means “mother will improve things.” Her organization is an embodiment of who Angelique has become for her local community, as she’s been a mother figure for many traumatized females. The organization empowers women by teaching them basic skills like sewing, baking, farming, and speaking and reading the local language, in order to give them the ability to earn some income and be independent. Mama Bongisa has also recently integrated men into the community.
The community’s means of revenue are very modest. They sell crops and cater baked goods as a source of revenue, which fund lessons and activities for this displaced demographic.
Sister Angelique is a sterling example of how one person can have a large impact on a community of families ravaged by war. Sign this petition to applaud Sister Angelique for her humanitarian efforts.
Dear Sister Angelique,
Your humanitarian efforts are worthy of high praise. You have overcome your own personal traumas from the war and went above and beyond to help your community, which shows much courage in your character. You are bringing security and hope to a lost generation of Congolese citizens.
Your organization provides a sense of belonging and kinship to those who have been orphaned by the violence, those who are ostracized by their family for simply being victims of sexual violence, and other displaced people of difficult circumstances. It is a much needed psychological remedy for your community. Please continue to provide your community with your extraordinary leadership and compassion.
