Target: John Bon Jovi and the JBJ Soul Kitchen
Goal: Thank this restaurant founded by the John Bon Jovi Soul Foundation for its unique approach to alleviating community hunger
“Hope is delicious.” The motto of the non-profit JBJ Soul Kitchen reflects its menu – a range of nutritious dishes with no prices. The food is made from fresh, local ingredients that are organic when possible, some grown in the restaurant’s own garden. A suggested donation of ten dollars covers the cost of the entire 3 course meal, which consists of a salad or soup, a choice of fish, meat, or vegetarian main course, and a freshly baked dessert. Diners unable to pay for the meal can volunteer at the restaurant as payment, helping to prepare food, set or bus tables, clean or stock items, or wash and dry dishes. An hour of volunteering pays for a meal, but Soul Kitchen also welcomes diners who would like to volunteer in addition to paying. Volunteering at Soul Kitchen not only pays for meals, but can also lead to qualification for job training.
Dedicated to “bringing back neighborhood,” JBJ Soul Kitchen is a community restaurant with a welcoming setting that often intentionally seats diners with others they don’t know. The kitchen also partners with the local Foodbank and the New Jersey Anti-Hunger Coalition to host talks on community hunger, food insecurity and ways to resolve the issue statewide. Now in training to be a chef, one volunteer testifies to the restaurant’s capacity to empower the local community of Redbank in New Jersey. Instead of getting handouts, he says, people can come and earn their food, and have a chance to feed their families and loved ones, too.
Please take a moment to sign the petition below and commend the JBJ Soul Kitchen for their outstanding role in building community and nourishing the hungry. They are demonstrating that no matter how much or how little we have, engaging in our community can help us find fulfillment.
Dear JBJ Soul Kitchen,
I want to thank you for your wonderful work that brings holistic nourishment to your community of Redbank, New Jersey. With your menu free of prices and full of fresh, nutritious dishes, your kitchen shows the power of good food and helping hands in bringing together individuals to strengthen a community.
You empower your community by giving those who are struggling to feed themselves and their loved ones an opportunity to volunteer as payment for their meal. As volunteering at Soul Kitchen can also lead to qualifying for job training, you give individuals a chance at responsibility, so they may pursue their dreams. Within this warm environment that encourages neighbors to meet and support each other, you foster a spirit of kindness and generosity that is very gratifying to experience. Because of people like you and organizations like yours, I have hope that we can tackle community hunger.
