Urge the Government to Stop Slaughtering Horses

Target: The Bureau of Land Management

Goal: Stop the rounding-up of wild horses for slaughter

The U.S. Government, in a cruel practice called, ’round-up,’ is herding and capturing healthy, wild horses that live on federal lands.  The horses are crammed into trucks and transferred out of the country to be auctioned and slaughtered for horse meat.  This disturbing practice is outdated and must stop.

According to the Bureau of Land Management, a ’round-up’ is a form of population control.  The Bureau uses helicopter to herd horses into a loading area. A round-up can last for several weeks.

Animal activists disagree with the ’round-up’ process. For example, the Fund for Animals argues that the sound of the helicopters creates panic and extreme stress in wild horse herds.  The Fund argues that this particularly impacts pregnant mares and foals.   Moreover, foals that are unaccustomed to running long distances can suffer limb injuries. Furthermore, mare and foals are usually separated.  The Bureau claims that it makes  ‘every effort’ to reunite mares with lost foals.

According the PBS Nature, some animal advocacy groups have reluctantly embraced an alternative method of population control that involves a fertility control agent, PZP (porcine zonae pellucidae). Captured mares are injected with an infertility vaccine at close range.  The vaccine does not produce  side effects in the horses.  The Fund for Animals argues that the vaccine is more humane than roundups.

By signing the petition below, you  demand that the U.S. Government stop the cruel round-up practice that sends horses to slaughter and implement modern, humane methods of population control.

PETITION LETTER

Dear Bureau of Land Management:

The U.S. Government, in a cruel practice called, ’round-up,’ is herding and capturing healthy, wild horses that live on federal lands.  The horses are crammed into trucks and transferred out of the country to be auctioned and slaughtered for horse meat.  This disturbing practice is outdated and must stop.  A round-up can last for several weeks.

We  demand that the U.S. Government act in a civilized, humane way and stop the cruel round-up practice.  The government should use a humane alternative for any needed population control.

Sincerely,
