Don’t Burn Trees For Energy

Target: United States House of Representatives

Goal: To stop funding biomass generation through the burning of national forests by power companies.

In the quest for renewable energy and less dependency on fossil fuels a variety of options have been proposed, including biomass. Biomass is the use of biological material, usually plant matter, to create energy. The biological material is then chemically converted or burned to produce heat and energy. While biomass is a questionable energy source already, the power companies are asking for government support to allow them to harvest trees from native forests to burn for energy.

Companies who wish to burn trees pose a great threat to the environment. Burning forests is an obvious destruction of natural resources. Scientists have also said that the practice contributes to climate change and causes more toxic air pollution than burning fossil fuels like coal.

While the burning of biomass causes pollution, it can be done in a somewhat responsible way. Biomass companies can plant and harvest their own crops to burn. Also, natural waste can be used to create energy. This would at least leave existing forestry in tact. However, the companies have no regard for protected areas and are asking to cut down tress in public lands, private forests, and even old forests that are in the process of regrowth.

The United States government has already proposed legislation that would subsidize the production of biomass through the destruction of national forests. The practice is a major threat to our environment and our health. There are other ways to create renewable, sustainable energy and subsidies should be provided to more environmentally conscious power companies. Sign this bill to urge the House of Representatives not to subsidize the irresponsible burning of forests.

Dear United States House of Representatives,

In the search for energy sources, companies have proposed many ideas. Biomass is one such option that has been given a lot of attention by the government. While burning biomass may be a viable method of creating energy, it threatens our environment and public health.

Biomass companies who are asking for you support wish to harvest whole trees from national forests to burn for energy. This practice would put more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere creating pollution and disregarding climate change. Much of the forestry of our nation has already been depleted and we need to preserve what remains.

Companies who wish to practice energy production through biomass should provide their own resources. Companies can plant the plants they wish to burn and not use the existing environment. While this would still be a threat to the environment, it would be a more responsible practice.

With so many other energy options on the table and in need of support, there is no need to subsidize biomass. It is especially wrong to provide support to biomass companies who wish to practice irresponsible and nonrenewable biomass by harvesting existing forestry. I urge you disregard propositions that would subsidize biomass companies and allow them to collect resources from wherever they choose. Our environment cannot afford to be threatened any longer.

stop these arsonists from burning down trees now cause burning forests were already illegal in certain places where trees live.
