Demand Boy Scouts of America Apoligize for Sexual Abuse and Stop Abuse Now

Target: Boy Scouts of America

Goal: Apologize for sexual abuse committed by troop leaders and create a new policy to ensure future abuse doesn’t occur.

The national chapter of Boy Scouts of America has been knowingly allowing sexual predators to participate in their organization in positions of authority alongside young, vulnerable boys. Evidence just emerged due to the filing of a recent lawsuit in Seattle by 12 victims that have been continually victimized by troop leaders. The national chapter maintains a list of predators within their organization, that they themselves call the “perversion files,” and it has over 6,500 names on it. Another list with 12,000 more names has supposedly already been deleted. Not only have they declined to share this information with local chapters, but they have denied that on-going abuse is their fault or responsibility. They claim that actions taken by individual chapters is not the responsibility of the national unit. However, they have knowingly and negligently allowed adults to be in positions of power when they are fully aware that they are child molesters.

The lawsuit filed by Attorney Tim Kosnoff in Seattle originally began by representing 12 local boys. The abuse is said to have taken place between 1960 and 2006. In the Seattle area, there have been 13 men that were named as alleged abusers. Nationwide, Kosnoff is representing more than 100 boys total who have now come forward with abuse claims against Boy Scouts of America. The boys were said to have been raped or molested during troop outings, such as hiking and camping trips. All victims were between 11-17 at the time of their attacks.

The lack of oversight alone that would allow abuse on such a large scale to occur is terrifying, but the fact that the national chapter actually knew and maintained files of known child molesters within their organization, and did absolutely nothing to warn local leaders, parents, police, or anyone, is completely shocking. A national organization that is entrusted with the care of children should have very high hiring and screening standards, and should never tolerate even the slightest suspicion of child abuse within their ranks. Tell the Boy Scouts of America what they did was wrong, and demand they apologize. Also, demand they change their policies, rid their organization of any predators, and make good with the many victims.

Dear Boy Scouts of America,

Newfound knowledge of child molestation taking place within your organization is shocking, but even more shocking is the fact that your organization has identified these child molesters and has hidden this information from your local chapters. Your so called “perversion lists” that you keep with over 6,500 names could have kept hundreds of young boys from being molested. Instead, your organization chose to keep these names secret, and then deny responsibility when a lawsuit was filed against you claiming negligence.

Any organization that is in charge of children has a duty to keep those children safe. Knowingly employing child molesters to take care of children is completely immoral, and should be severely punished. I demand you apologize to the hundreds of boys you’ve hurt, and compensate them for their losses. Also, I demand that you remove all 6,500 known molesters from your organization, and take immediate steps to put new policies into place ensuring that sexual predators cannot come close to the boys in your care.
