Target: Walmart CEO Mike Duke
Goal: Commend Walmart for urging product suppliers to find greener alternatives to chemical ingredients
In response to growing consumer awareness of harmful chemicals in everyday products, Walmart has taken the initiative to work with suppliers to find safer and more sustainable alternatives. The store announced that it will require some suppliers to limit or eliminate certain chemicals chosen from a priority list in their products, and replace them with greener substitutes. Additionally, they will also begin labeling their own brand’s household cleaning products according to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Safer Product Labeling program, which indicates products that are safe for people and the environment. This is a bold move in the right direction for a big company.
As its first move toward creating safer products for people, Walmart will be targeting manufacturers of items that have been a top cause for consumer concern. These include cosmetics, personal care items, and household cleaners. Many of these everyday products often contain chemicals that are considered toxic.
On a sustainability note, Walmart has also begun requiring producers of commodity grains like wheat, corn, and soy to reduce their use of fertilization with a clearly outlined plan.
Because Walmart is such a large retailer with extensive reach to customers, it truly has the potential to make a difference with its move toward consumer safety and sustainability. Perhaps, as a result, we will see other corporations follow in its footsteps. Commend Walmart for responding to our concerns as consumers, and requiring suppliers to reduce the concentration of dangerous chemicals in their products.
