Punish Couple Guilty of Child Endangerment

Child Abuse

Target: The Honorable Judge Faustino J. Fernandez-Vina

Goal: Demand jail time for couple who has been charged with child endangerment

A ten-year-old boy ran away from home recently, making it just far enough to tell a neighbor that he did not want to go back to his mother because she was restraining him to a radiator and not feeding him for two weeks straight.  His 31-year-old mother, Florence Pollard lives with her boyfriend, Brian L. Craig and has five other children of ages eleven to seven months, and is pregnant.  The couple is currently being held in county jail on bail in the amount of $50,000 each.  If they do not stay in jail, the abuse could continue with their next child.

After investigating the boy’s claims, police found a lock and chain attached to a radiator pipe in his bedroom.  They also found zip ties, which the boy said were often used to restrain him as well.  In addition to these abuses, the boy said he was made to sleep on the floor attached to the pipe with no covers, was not being fed, and was rarely unrestrained to use the bathroom.

Although Ms. Pollard and Mr. Craig have been charged with endangerment of a child’s welfare to the second degree and criminal restraint to the third degree, their sentence depends largely on the existence of prior criminal charges against them.  Without any criminal background, it is possible for them to receive a probationary sentence rather than jail time.  However, the recommended sentence is five to ten years of imprisonment for child endangerment charges alone.  Fortunately, all six children are now in custody of the NJ Division of Child Protection and Permanency.

The cruelty imposed on this boy (and perhaps his siblings too,) by his own mother could have seriously injured him or caused his death if it continued.  It is imperative that both Pollard and Craig face proper punishment for their actions.  Demand that the couple receive a sentence including jail time and in accord with their abusive treatment of children.

Dear Honorable Judge Fernandez-Vina,

Recently, 31-year-old Florence Pollard and her boyfriend Brian L. Craig were arrested for the endangerment and criminal restraint of Ms. Pollard’s ten-year-old son.  They are currently being held in Camden County Jail on bail in the amount of $50,000.  Police investigations have so far confirmed the ten-year-old’s account of being chained to a radiator pipe by his feet with his hands retained by zip ties, day and night for two weeks straight.  The boy also reported not being fed or allowed to go to the bathroom.  Ms. Pollard has five other children, one of them with Mr. Craig, and is currently pregnant.

These confirmed abuses are depraved, and at best, an incomplete picture of the cruelty imposed on Ms. Pollard’s children.  We, the undersigned, are seeking a sentence concurrent with the crime.  Clearly, this couple is not equipped to properly care for children, and should be punished for the appalling treatment of Ms. Pollard’s ten-year-old son with an ample prison sentence, even if no prior convictions exist on their records.  Please consider the sentence of Ms. Pollard and Mr. Craig carefully, as this is a human rights issue at its core.
