Target: Michigan State Representative Kenneth Kurtz and Michigan Republicans
Goal: Condemn Michigan Republicans for proposed “license to discriminate” bills against gay couples
A Michigan Republican cohort in the House of Representatives has proposed several bills that would allow adoption agencies the right to discriminate against gay couples. They attempted to pass similar legislation last year but failed to get floor votes. House Bill 4927 and House Bill 4928 implore adoption agencies to invoke moral or religious convictions to allow them to discriminate against any couples without consequences handed out by the state.
The bills state that adoption agencies are not required to counsel, refer or assist placing a child in a family if that placement is in direct violation of the child-placing agency’s religious or moral policies or convictions. Local or state governments cannot deny adoption agencies a grant or contract because they object to place a child in a certain household as a result of their moral policy or convictions. The law recognizes that such a policy does not take into account whether the proposed placement would be good for the child.
These bills would enable the arbitrary discrimination by adoption agencies funded by the state. Same-sex couples cannot legally adopt in Michigan. At the moment, there is a federal lawsuit challenging that law as well as other laws that ban same-sex marriage. Michigan Governor Rick Snyder and Attorney General Bill Schuette believe that these laws do not discriminate against any individuals.
If these bills pass and the federal lawsuit to legalize same-sex adoption is successful, same-sex couples would still face the possibility that they will not be able to adopt and have a family. Such legislation represents yet another attempt by Republicans to curb the rights of same-sex couples by denying them the possibility of having a family. Please sign this petition to condemn Michigan republicans for proposed “license to discriminate” bills. Members of the gay community should not be second-class citizens, and all couples deserve the chance to have a family.
Dear Michigan state Republicans and Representative Kenneth Kurtz,
We condemn you for proposed House Bills 4927 and 4928, which would effectively grant adoption agencies the right to deny placing children in certain households because of their religious or moral convictions or policies. Local or state governments would be forced to provide contracts and grants to adoption agencies even if they exercise the right to discriminate against families out of their convictions. Such bills that grant child-placing agencies the license to discriminate for any reason without consequence by the state is heinous and must be condemned.
Although same-sex adoption is not legal in Michigan, there is currently a federal law suit that challenges that law. If successful, same-sex couples would be able to adopt and create a family for themselves. However, if these bills are passed, their right to have a family would essentially be stripped from them. The continual attack on equal rights for members of the gay community must be stopped.
