Target: Yemeni president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi
Goal: Arrest man who raped his eight-year-old child bride to death
An eight-year-old girl living in a tribal region in Yemen bordering Saudi Arabia was forced into an arranged marriage to a forty-year-old man. She was raped and murdered by the man arranged to be her husband. She died of mutilated genitals and internal injuries.
Yemen passed a law in 2009 prohibiting child marriage, restricting the age of marriage to seventeen years or older. The law was repealed by lawmaking extremists who claimed the law contradicted traditional Muslim teaching.
The eight-year-old girl was named Rawan. It is reported that roughly eighty-two percent of girls in Yemen are married before age seventeen, with fourteen percent married before age fifteen. While Yemeni authorities have denied the existence of this incident, the reporter who originally broke the story is standing by the facts.
Please sign this petition to stand with the victims of child abuse to have the man who raped and murdered a little girl in Yemen arrested for his heinous actions, and to urge Yemeni lawmakers to re-institute the ban on child marriages.
Dear President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi,
Recently, an eight-year-old Yemeni girl, Rawan, was raped and murdered by her arranged husband. She died a horrible death of mutilation and internal injury, something no child or human being for that matter should ever have to endure.
The practice of marrying children under the age of seventeen is brutal and violent and horrific. There is no excuse for damaging a child in this way, and there is no proper teaching that would encourage this kind of terrible abuse. The family of Rawan must be held accountable along with any other willing participants including, most particularly, her arranged husband.
Children are not meant to be used by adults, and they should be not introduced to these terrifying sexual practices through force or any other means. The international community will not stand for this inhumane cruelty.
Arrest and hold accountable Rawan’s caretakers, the people responsible for her arranged marriage, and her arranged husband. Prevent this from happening again through prevention and punishment for the perpetrators. The world community is watching.
