Commend Animal Rights Group for Rescuing 1200 Hens

Free Range Hens

Target: Kimberly Sturla, executive director of Animal Place, a farm animal rescue group

Goal: Commend Animal Place for saving 1200 hens from being euthanized and bringing them to good homes

Twelve hundred hens were recently rescued from the terrible conditions they lived in on an unknown farm. The hens are now safe and sound thanks to Animal Place, a Grass Valley, California based animal rescue group.  The hens, who were scheduled to be euthanized because they are past their prime egg-laying years, were de-beaked, atrophied, and suffering from osteoporosis as a result of living in battery cages for most of their lives.  The birds will now be taken in by animal sanctuaries and rescue operations in New York, where they will live permanently or be offered for adoption as pets.  Because of Animal Place’s courageous efforts, they will live as companion animals, free to wander and make their own choices.

The rescue operation involved flying the hens across the country from Hayward, California, to Elmira, New York.  Animal Place was concerned that they would not find enough suitable homes for the hens on the West Coast, and turned to the East Coast, where they were able to find nine organizations willing to care for them.  Because commercial airlines would not take the birds, they had to turn to privately owned aircrafts.  The flight, which cost $50,000, was funded by an anonymous bird lover, and was the first all-chicken journey of its kind.

Because of the psychological and physical damage suffered by the birds, Animal Place spent weeks before the trip rehabilitating them so they would be able to make the journey safely.  Once on the plane, the hens were accompanied by an animal care expert, who kept an eye on them as they slept their way to a better life.

Without Animal Place’s efforts to bring these hens to safe and happy homes, they would have been gassed and tossed in the garbage.  Now rehabilitated, they have a life of sun and grass ahead of them.  Commend Animal Place for their dedication to bringing peace to 1,200 hens.

Dear Ms. Sturla,

The rescue mission that you and your organization recently organized and executed to save over a thousand hens was courageous and commendable.  Having lived in appalling conditions during the first years of their lives, they needed the rehabilitation and care that your organization offered.  Because of your dedication, those hens will live the remainder of their lives in freedom.

Although many other birds need rescuing, your organization’s mission went above and beyond the call of duty for animals everywhere.  The unprecedented cross-country journey of the chickens garnered much needed attention for poorly treated farm animals everywhere.  You have done a truly wonderful thing.  Thank you for your efforts in promoting animal welfare and completing important animal rescue missions.
