Condemn Glenn Beck for Anti-Environment Announcement

Target: Glenn Beck

Goal: Retract and apologize for statements that he will fire employees who make efforts to create a greener workplace.

In a bewildering display of histrionics, Glenn Beck recently responded to the fact that one of his employees at The Blaze’s headquarters had begun replacing water bottles with water coolers and distributing recycling bins throughout the building, by inviting the Vice President of Studio Operations onto his radio show for an explanation. He refused to believe her when she replied that the changes allowed her to cut back on costs for the studio, choosing instead to believe that the adjustments were purely motivated by an effort to transition to a greener workplace. In fact, he embarked on a rant excoriating the environmental movement, asserting, “Global warming is a pile of crap.”

In fact, he went on to insist that the VP of Studio Operations distribute a memo making clear that “if anyone does anything in this company because of global warming, they’re fired.” This company-wide memo also was to include a warning that if non-compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) are available, any person who purchases fluorescent bulbs for the company will lose their job. Beck assured listeners that “I’m dead serious…I fire the person that starts to purchase fluorescent lightbulbs, UNLESS that is the only lightbulb for a very specific reason, and I want to be CC’d on what that reason is.”

By signing this petition, you are calling on Glenn Beck to retract his statements denying global warming and calling it “a load of socialist, communist crap.” You are urging him to issue an apology to his VP of Studio Operations for raking her over the coals for pursuing a more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly workplace, which is part of her job. You are encouraging him as an influential public figure to be more careful about spreading falsehoods on his program that will confuse and mislead listeners.

Dear Glenn Beck,

Your recent remarks on your radio program to your Vice President of Studio Operations, raking her over the coals for her efforts to make your workplace more efficient and cost-effective, were alarming, overly dramatic, and misleading to your listeners. You deliberately spread falsities such as “Global warming is a pile of crap,” leading informed listeners to view you as petulant and unprofessional. By declaring that any employee who purchases compact fluorescent light bulbs will be fired immediately and that pursuing a greener workplace will not be tolerated, you are engaging in fear-mongering and duplicity.

I am calling on you to retract your factless statements against global warming and the environmental movement. I am urging you to apologize to your VP of Studio Operations for persecuting her for doing her job by pursuing a more cost-effective workplace. Finally, I am encouraging you to cease your war on global warming activism and the above small acts of environmentalism, and to stop spreading lies on your radio program, as an influential political figure with a responsibility to his listeners and community.

  1. Even though I cannot stand to watch or listen to Glenn Beck, he has the right to impose any “anti-green” restrictions on his employees as he wishes, just as any of us have the right to impose any “pro-green” policies on our employees.

Besides, signing this petition may mMke the signers feel better about ourselves but it has a 0% chance of influencing Mr. Beck’s workplace policies. Sad, but true.
