Target: Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz
Goal: Commend the Department of Energy for restarting loan program for green vehicle technology
In 2008, the Department of Energy set aside $25 billion to loan to companies who committed to manufacturing energy efficient and eco-friendly vehicles in the U.S. Unfortunately, no loans have been given out since 2011, despite most of the funding remaining unspent. A number of companies have had to slow or abandon their manufacturing plans due to a lack of response from the Department of Energy. However, it recently announced plans to resume distributing loans, which is good news for America’s efficient vehicle industry.
A Department of Energy spokeswoman made it clear that the agency has “plans to conduct an active outreach campaign” in order to find suitable candidates for the remaining loans. Many previous applicants have been very successful. For example, the green car company Tesla received a $465 million loan and used the funds to establish production of electric cars that now set benchmarks for safety and fuel efficiency. The company has also paid back the loan nine years ahead of schedule. The iconic American car manufacturer Ford is on track to pay back its loan on time as well, and is using the funds to produce 13 models of greener cars.
This investment has the potential to help the economy by producing more manufacturing jobs for Americans and help the environment by putting greener cars on the road. Developing these vital fuel-efficient vehicles and related technology will also solidify America’s place as a world leader in the fight against climate change. Please sign this petition to commend the Department of Energy for continuing to invest in green vehicle technology.
Dear Mr. Moniz,
America’s dependence on fossil fuels is problematic for a number of reasons. In addition to preventing us from becoming energy self-sufficient, the use of these energy sources produces harmful greenhouse gases that intensify the effects of climate change. One of the easiest ways for America to cut back on both greenhouse emissions and fuel consumption is by driving greener vehicles. That’s why the Department of Energy’s loan program for manufacturers of efficient vehicles is so important, and why you should be commended for resuming the program.
Investing in America’s green car manufacturers will help our nation to produce more manufacturing jobs and less greenhouse gases. It has the short-term impact of helping the economy, and the long-term impact of helping the environment. It also ensures that the global community continues to view us as a technology leader and a nation that is serious about combating climate change. Thank you for your actions.
