Target: Developers of Choice: Texas, Allyson Whipple, Carly Kocurek, and Grace Jennings
Goal: Applaud these women for developing an educational video game that illustrates obstacles to abortion access for Texas women.
Even before Texas’s well-publicized onslaught against women’s reproductive rights, writer and cultural historian Carly Kocurek came up with the idea for an interactive narrative that details the process that a woman must undertake in order to access abortion services. The omnibus anti-abortion bill that recently became Lone Star State law, adding restrictions on providers that make it increasingly and unnecessarily difficult for women to access their services, and banning all abortions after just 20 weeks, spurred Kocurek to join forces with writer, editor, and poet Allyson Whipple and illustrator Grace Jennings to make the vision a reality. The trio have started an Indiegogo campaign to crowdfund the game’s production, offering original artwork, tote bags with game art, and producer credit for help with the project. They are billing it as “a very serious game,” clarifying that “Choice: Texas is based on extensive research into healthcare access, legal restrictions, geography, and demographics, and is reflective of the real circumstances facing women in the state.”
This important project recognizes the intersectionality of issues affecting women’s access to abortion services, and the trio has developed several characters to reflect different “specific socioeconomic, geographic, and demographic factors impacting abortion access in Texas.” RH Reality Check reports that the three intend the game as an educational tool and accordingly will make it available to play for free online after development is completed. Kocurek and Whipple are slated to present a prototype at the upcoming Future and Reality of Gaming conference in Vienna.
By signing this petition, you are applauding the efforts of these three women to make clear exactly how unnecessarily difficult the new restrictions make it to access abortion care services for Texas women. You are thanking them for their innovative approach to sex education and activism in the area of reproductive rights.
Dear creators of Choice: Texas,
I am excited about your campaign to fund this educational video game project spreading awareness about the true implications of Texas’s recent legislative attacks on women’s reproductive rights. Billing the project as a “very serious game” sends an important message to Texas women who are suffering as a result of the very real and unnecessary deprivation of abortion care services: you are not alone. By encouraging people through the interactive narratives of Choice: Texas to walk in another individual’s shoes, you are calling attention to the intersectionality of issues that affect women’s access to abortion services, including legal barriers as well as economic and logistical obstacles.
Thank you for standing up for reproductive rights for Texas women in such a unique and innovative way, which will certainly change the way people think about sex education and women’s rights. Thank you for your work in promoting and crowdfunding this vital project in a time where attacks on reproductive freedoms are becoming commonplace.
