Goal: Commend Ford on continued commitment to sustainable manufacturing
American car manufacturer Ford has successfully created two different car models whose seats are made out of 100 percent recycled materials. Not only is the car a leader in great fuel economy, but the manufacturing process and materials are environmentally sustainable as well.
The 2013 American-made Fusion Electric as well as the Focus Hybrid SE have seats that are made with 100 percent recycled materials. Production sites in Asia and Europe use 43 percent recycled materials because of the goods availability, but they are working towards the 100 percent as well. The new Fusion’s cloth seat surfaces are made out of a compound called Repreve yarn, which is made of made of recycled bottles and denim. Fender splash shields and underbody components are made from recycled car battery casings. Sustainable soy foam is used to make seat cushions, and in the insides of headrests.
Each Ford Fusion created uses an average of 38.9 16-ounce plastic bottles, two pairs of blue jeans and the equivalent of 31,250 soybeans. Making the Fusion out of recycled plastic saves about 2 million pounds of plastic from our nation’s landfills. The use of soybeans instead of petroleum for the seat cushions has “reduced petroleum production by more than 5 million pounds and carbon dioxide emissions by more than 20 million pounds annually.”

Dear Robert Brown and Carol Kordich,
Thank you for your commitment to making Ford products as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible. Having reached the goal of producing seats that are produced in America made with 100 percent recycled products on both the Focus Hybrid SE and Fusion Electric models is a huge accomplishment. It is very refreshing to see that you are continuing to pursue research and development in order to ensure that in the near future Ford cars made in your Asian and European markets will be sustainable.
Ensuring that products are sustainable while making sure that the higher costs aren’t passed onto consumers is of utmost importance, and both of you have made excellent innovations to ensure that was possible. I want to say thank you for your continued effort to make your company an industry leader in environmentally sound products and sustainability.
