Target: Judges of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals
Goal: Commend Court for upholding ban on gay conversion therapy for minors
Gay conversion therapy stigmatizes homosexuality by labeling it as socially unacceptable and as a disease. Forcing a child to undergo therapy is cruel and may cause long-term or permanent psychological trauma. Studies by the American Psychological Association indicate that conversion therapy can lead to substance abuse, low self-esteem, depression, social withdrawal, and suicidal thoughts.
All an LGBT teenager needs is unconditional love. The LGBT demographic is already at high risk for developing psychological problems because of social stigmatization, discrimination, and bullying. Furthermore, the scientific community has denied classification of homosexuality as a mental illness since 1973, and we should not regress into outdated modes of thinking by promoting misinformation and this type of therapy.
California has been seeking a ban on gay conversion therapy for minors but was met with a roadblock. The National Association For Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH) argued that the proposed ban is an infringement on free speech and a violation of potential patients’, parents’, and counselors’ rights. However, San Francisco’s 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals did not consider the ban a human rights issue. In a unanimous ruling, the court said the bill’s goal is to regulate professional conduct and said free speech was irrelevant in this case. The court also said, “Parents have a constitutionally protected right to make decisions regarding the care, custody, and control of their children, but that right is ‘not without limitations.'” They concluded that the legislature acted rationally and within their power to protect the well-being of minors.
By signing the petition below, you will commend the Judges of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for upholding this ban.
Dear Judges of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals,
Thank you for upholding the ban on gay conversion therapy for minors. Allowing this therapy to continue would cause devastating effects on the self-image of those affected. It is wrong to tell LGBT youth that their sexual orientations are mental illnesses and socially unacceptable. To have their parents support that message by subjecting them to therapy is understandably unbearable to LGBT youth who are still in the process of struggling with their sexual identities.
Acceptance and unconditional love are the only “therapy” LGBT youth need from their parents during this volatile period in their lives. We have come far as a society in promoting tolerance regardless of sexual orientation. By upholding the ban, the court has ensured the safety of minors and has prevented pseudo-scientific methods to flourish.
