Target: Vincent Lensen of Bikers 4 Orcas
Goal: Applaud biker group for their work in spreading awareness about captive orcas and returning them to their native waters.
A possibly unexpected group has taken up the important work of advocating for captive killer whales: Bikers 4 Orcas. Recently, 36-year-old Vincent Lensen, a motorcyclist and father from Holland, created the group to raise awareness about orcas in captivity with the ambition of returning them to their home waters. He cites his dedication to the marine animals as a visit to the Dolfinarium in Holland as a boy, where he met an orca named Gudrun and learned about killer whales; a few years ago his activist inspiration arrived when he took his children to visit an orca at a theme park, who had been rescued off the Dutch coast, and he began researching about killer whales in captivity.
Becoming determined to do something about the distressing conditions for whales kept for entertainment, Lensen decided he would use his motorcycle riding as a way to raise awareness and fight for the freedom of wild-caught captive orcas across the world, including aquariums and theme parks in Miami, San Diego, and Argentina. Bikers 4 Orcas are also currently organizing and promoting in many countries, seeking the retirement of captive-bred orcas to enclosed sea sanctuaries, and ultimately aiming to organize “a massive worldwide protest ride.” As Lensen says, he and other bikers might identify with orcas because bikers also enjoy “A breeze of wind on your skin, a wide world in front of you, and the ability to go wherever you want… Bikers also experience this in a group, a club or a gathering, like a pack of wolves, or a pod of orcas.”
By signing this petition, you are applauding the work of Bikers 4 Orcas, and their tireless organizing on behalf of captive killer whales, both wild-caught and captive-bred. You are encouraging them to continue to organize and build their group worldwide to make sure that the voices of orcas are heard, and that they are no longer held captive for the purpose of entertainment.
Dear Mr. Lensen,
I am delighted to hear of the group Bikers 4 Orcas which you created to raise awareness about the plight of captive orcas, and to advocate for their freedom and care. I am inspired by your sympathetic words conveying the need for freedom and family that orcas naturally feel, the satisfaction of which is made impossible by their captivity.
Thank you for creating Bikers 4 Orcas, and for inspiring others to join your cause in spreading awareness and organizing in so many different countries on behalf of killer whales. Thank you for your unending dedication to retiring and freeing captive whales. Your unique activism sends a message of encouragement to all those who think they can offer little to the causes about which they are passionate.
