Target: Al Jazeera America
Goal: Commend Al Jazeera America’s unbiased and refreshing coverage of climate change
During the year of 2012, nightly news broadcasts on NBC, ABC, CBS, and Fox combined covered about 60 minutes worth of climate change news. Furthermore, eighty nine percent of the time the topic was shown through a political lens rather than an informative, environmental one, providing misinformation and creating bias. Al Jazeera America has set out to change that in its very first day of broadcasting, covering about 30 minutes of climate change news – almost half of what was covered in one year’s worth of national news broadcasts – and should be commended for it.
Despite twenty years’ worth of conclusive scientific research proving that climate change is occurring and caused by humans, many Americans remain skeptical. This is due largely in part because of how the media has presented the topic. Special interest groups and politicians have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on campaigns to confuse the American public about climate change for political and economic gain. Because these are the individuals that the media chooses to showcase, their agendas and motives have the privilege of unquestioned dissemination.
Instead of interviewing politicians, who dominated network news broadcasts regarding climate change, Al Jazeera America invited guests more qualified to present the facts – three scientists familiar with the evidence of climate change. Al Jazeera America admires PBS as a model for fact-based journalism, and promises to provide unbiased and in-depth news coverage.
Al Jazeera America is making strides toward presenting its audience with reliable information about climate change. This issue has been pushed to the background despite its urgent nature. Commend Al Jazeera for bringing it back to the foreground, and in a way that will give us the facts, not the biased opinions of ulterior motives.
Dear Al Jazeera America,
Thank you for beginning your broadcasting with pertinent topics in a trustworthy manner. The climate change coverage reported on your first day of broadcast was comprehensive, informative, and included the right kind of sources.
In the midst of politically-driven media coverage, your presentation of climate change proved to be a promising example of unbiased, fact-based news. It is refreshing to see an honest approach to a highly controversial topic, despite the scientific evidence supporting the existence of climate change. We commend you for presenting the facts and bringing a sorely neglected issue back into focus.
