Target: Tom Corbett, Governor of Pennsylvania
Goal: Condemn the homophobic remarks and policies frequently issuing from the Pennsylvania government, and demand that Tom Corbett and his administration stop discriminating against the gay community both linguistically and politically.
Recently, a clerk in Pennsylvania has issued same sex marriage licenses to one hundred and fifty four couples. Governor Tom Corbett’s administration has filed suit to stop the actions of this clerk, on the basis of some very homophobic logic. “Had the clerk issued marriage licenses to twelve year olds in violation of state law”, state lawyers asked, “would anyone seriously contend that each twelve year old is entitled to a hearing on the validity of his ‘license?” This remark shows that as far Governor Corbett and his administration are concerned, gay and lesbian adults possess the same mental capacity as children.
Sadly, the treatment of gay and lesbian sexual orientations as psychologically deficient is nothing new in America. Historically, gays and lesbians have been pathologized and patronized by state institutions, and the beliefs, remarks, and attitudes of the Corbett administration show this to still be the case. It’s bad enough that Corbett’s administration is so terrified of same sex marriage that he must stand in opposition to softening federal laws regarding the issue, but the fact that attorneys on behalf of the state believe that this can be justified by comparing the wants, needs, and desires of same-sex couples to those of “children” is equally disturbing. Tell Tom Corbett that his days of homophobia are numbered, and that the voting public of Pennsylvania won’t stand for such intolerant behavior and language from their government.
Dear Governor Corbett,
Your administration has made no secret about its contempt for the rights of gay and lesbian citizens. You may have the right to challenge the validity of same-sex marriage in court based on the letter of the law, but you do not have the right to denigrate or discriminate against gay and lesbian adults. Attorneys arguing on the behalf of your administration against same-sex marriage compared the wants, needs, and desires of legal adults in same sex relationships to the wants, needs, and desires of “children.” This remark suggests that you and your administration believe that gay and lesbian adults are not legal adults and are by virtue of their sexual orientation unable to desire or content to legal rights.
The homophobia inherent to your attorneys’ statement is undeniable. The one-hundred and fifty marriages licensed by a county clerk were between consenting adults; they were not between “twelve year olds.” Perhaps you and really do believe that the concept of a union between two men or two women possesses all the emotional, legal, and sexual gravitas of two children playing house, and if this is true, then Pennsylvania wants no part of you. Stop using homophobia to justify your baseless lawsuit against a county clerk who simply wants to legally validate same sex relationships.
