Demand Justice for Hate Crime Against Transgender Woman Beaten and Killed

Target: New York Police Department

Goal: Urge a prompt investigation to arrest all those involved in the hate-crime murder against a transgender woman.

Twenty-one year old transgender woman Islan Nettles died after being beaten brutally in Harlem, New York. Nettles had been out with some friends when a group of men recognized that she was transgender and began to beat her while exclaiming anti-transgender and anti-gay slurs. Following the assault, she was declared brain dead at the hospital and removed from life support.

The incident is currently being investigated by the NYPD, but so far only one person has been arrested in connection to the case. Unfortunately, several other men in connection have not yet been arrested.

The remaining offenders should not be enabled to be free on the streets after their senseless act of violence. Besides the need for justice in the Islan Nettles case, the fact that the offenders still have not been caught can be potentially dangerous for other innocent victims. The murder of Islan Nettles was a hate crime, which means that the offenders can easily strike again if they come across a person with morals that they do not agree with. For the justice of Islan Nettles, and the safety of all others in the gay and transgender community, it is of utmost importance that all others involved in the case be promptly found and appropriately punished.

By signing the petition below, you will be helping to insist that the New York Police Department investigate this case with urgency until all of Islan Nettles’ attackers are discovered, and justice is granted for this cruel and unfortunate incident.

Dear New York Police Department,

The horrific killing of transgender woman Islan Nettles requires immediate justification. Nettles was out with a group of friends when a group of men beat her while yelling homophobic and anti-transgender statements. She died shortly after at the hospital after being pronounced brain-dead.

This senseless act was not only a murder, but a hate crime whose offenders must be penalized immediately for their acts of hate and violence. It is important the offenders be condemned because they are dangerous and could soon target any other innocents whose lifestyles they do not support.

On behalf of the entire community who was affected by this event, I urge you to place priority on this case, prompting serious investigation, and not surrendering until all offenders are arrested and Islan Nettles receives the justice that she deserves.
