Target: The Lilith Fund, the Hersey Abortion Assistance Fund, Chicago Abortion Fund, New York Abortion Access Fund
Goal: Thank these non-profits for raising money to help struggling women pay for abortions.
Republican-controlled legislatures’ recent restrictions on abortions have hit low-income women the hardest. Abortions rights organizations report these laws disproportionately affect women with incomes below the poverty line, who make up 42% of those who have abortions. Such laws can mean 2 trips to the clinic, 24 hour waiting periods, mandatory and ultimately expensive ultrasounds, limits on the use of tax dollars, and stricter standards for clinics that have forced some to shut down, according to a report by the Los Angeles Times. Abortions are not covered by Medicaid, and many private insurance companies also do not cover the procedure, which can cost anywhere from $500 to $10,000 depending on the term of pregnancy and difficulty of the case.
Mostly volunteer-run abortion assistance funds hold events as varied as wine-tastings, casserole cook-offs, and even bowling tournaments in order to support communities of women for whom these volunteer groups are often their last resort. Setting aside reserve funds for women who are incarcerated, homeless, or survivors of domestic or sexual violence, the groups offer grants and in some cases, interest-free loans. When the organizations come to the end of their funds, which unfortunately happens all too often, volunteers provide advice to women, going over ways to come up with the money like getting a credit line or redeeming bottles and cans, the article says.
In the wake of the new laws that restrict access to abortions, many of these groups have seen dramatic spikes in the amount of calls to their hotlines and expect the trend to continue as the full effects of the restrictions materialize. Yet, as publicity campaigns for the laws amp up, so do donations to abortion assistance funds from all over the country.
Out of this scheme meant to ‘protect women’s health,’ abortion assistance funds stand for women’s equal access to abortion regardless of socioeconomic status. By signing the petition below, you can thank these volunteers for combating this health disparity.
Dear Lilith Fund, Hersey Abortion Assistance Fund, Chicago Abortion Fund, and New York Abortion Access Fund,
I would like to thank you for defending women’s rights to equal access to abortion regardless of socioeconomic status and fundraising to help low-income women pay for the procedure. As Republican-controlled legislatures pass greater restrictions on abortions, you work to offer much-needed funds and guidance to women who come to you as their last resort.
As these laws hit low-income women the hardest, especially those with incomes below the poverty line, you are helping to ensure women do not fall victim to a law that fails to protect them. By reserving funds for those women who are incarcerated, homeless, or victims of domestic or sexual violence, you demonstrate a commitment to justice that is both commendable and heartening. Thank you for your service and your compassion. You are truly saving lives.
