Target: Walmart CEO Mike Duke
Goal: Applaud Walmart for announcing that it will offer same-sex domestic partnership benefits beginning in 2014
Walmart recently announced that it will grant domestic partnerships benefits for all same-sex couples. Like same-sex spouses, same-sex partners would receive benefits that include dental, vision, medical, family leave, critical illness, accident insurance, 401K, and discount cards. These benefits for same-sex couples will be available in all fifty states as well as in Puerto Rico. This announcement represents a small step towards rectifying the second-class citizenship the gay community has endured in several states and with certain businesses.
Globally, Walmart has 2.2 million employees. Of those 2.2 million workers, 1.3 million are employed in the United States. More than half of the U.S. workers are currently on its health care plans. It is the biggest and most recent company to promulgate that equality of members of the gay and lesbian community is good for business. Walmart has a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees group called Walmart PRIDE. The domestic partners of employees can only be covered if they are legal spouses, not legally separated.
Walmart is in operation in all fifty states, Puerto Rico and in hundreds of municipalities. Invoking the Supreme Court’s recent decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act—a piece of federal legislation that defined marriage as solely between a man and a woman—Walmart asserted that every state in the country has come to define marriage, civil unions, and domestic partnerships in an idiosyncratic fashion. Walmart thus has decided to develop a single definition for all Walmart employees in the areas it has associates in order to make sure that there is consistency throughout all of its plethora of markets. Walmart further commented that the franchise plans to extend benefits to all domestic partners in order to remain competitive and to attract and ensure that the best workers are kept working for the company.
Please sign this petition to commend Walmart, the world’s largest retailer and the country’s biggest employer besides the federal government, for promoting equality for members of the gay community.
Dear Mr. Duke,
We commend you for your recent decision to extend benefits to domestic partnerships beginning in 2014. These benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, 401K, accident insurance and family leave. Your company continues to support the gay community and realizes that equality for all employees regardless of sexual orientation would boost business and morale in the workplace.
Walmart has 2.2 million employees worldwide, and 1.3 million of them work in the United States. Only about half of those 1.3 million workers are on health insurance plans. Beginning in 2014, many more employees will have access to health insurance thanks to your bold decision to extend health packages to legally recognized partners and spouses of gay couples. Your decision comes on the heels of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act and must be commended for promoting equal rights for gay couples throughout the country as well as worldwide.
