Commend Man for Risking Life to Save Cats From House Fire

Target: Mr. Marple

Goal: Commend man for saving cats from house fire

In a Phoenix, Arizona house fire, two cats lives were saved when the homeowner went back inside a burning house to get them out. The man got his two daughters out of the house and then returned to save the cats.

The man was seen shooing one cat out of the house. He then went back in to find the other. Part of the roof collapsed, scaring bystanders and firefighters. Many feared he had died after an hour with no sign of him or the cat. The man’s daughter, Jinea, said, “I thought I lost him. I thought I lost my dad.” Firefighters were unable to get inside to search for him because of the roof collapse. The man appeared unharmed with the cat in his arms soon after. He had escaped out the back door of the house.

The first cat to escape had no sign of injury and was cleared as perfectly fine. The second cat suffered smoke inhalation and burns, and was treated with an oxygen mask at the scene. Fortunately, the cat is expected to recover.

Firefighters say it was the strangest happy ending they have ever seen, and cautioned people not to go back inside a burning building. However, 40,000 pets die in house fires each year. Obviously, the homeowner who went to rescue his cats did not want them to be a part of this statistic. Some firefighters are trained in Basic Animal Rescue Training (BART), but this varies by town, and many have no experience with animals at all. An animal may also not come to an unfamiliar person, impeding its rescue. This man’s heroism deserves to be recognized.

Dear Mr. Marple,

Thank you for saving the lives of your cats by entering your burning house to get them. Many people would have left it up to the fire department to maybe save their pets, but since not all firefighters are trained in animal rescue, your rescue was what was best for your animals.

Forty thousand animals die in house fires every year. If more pet owners would do what you did and rescue their animals themselves, that statistic would be much smaller. Thank you for saving the lives of your sweet cats and inspiring others to do the same should they face that situation.
