Target: The voting public of Wisconsin
Goal: Speak out against a new law meant to curb protest and silence free speech in Wisconsin.
For the past two years, opponents of Wisconsin’s right-wing governor Scott Walker have been subjected to unlawful arrests and police intimidation for engaging in peaceful protests against his policies. Although they’ve been banned from occupying the State Capitol building itself, these protestors have been gathering outside the building singing songs of protest against Governor Walker’s attacks on social services, collective bargaining, and education.
Recently, a new law has been passed which requires gatherings of over twenty people to apply for a permit in order to occupy public space and engage in constitutionally protected free speech activity.
Since the passage of this law, a police crackdown on the singing protestors has led to over two hundred citations and arrests. Some of those arrested were in their 70’s and 80’s. This law was clearly meant to intimidate and suppress protest and dissent. The voting public of Wisconsin must stop the erosion of their free speech and their right to assembly and act to strike down the repressive new laws put into practice by Governor Scott Walker’s cutthroat administration.
Dear Citizens of Wisconsin,
The passage of new laws around assembly, speech, and protest in Wisconsin spell trouble for American democracy. The singing protestors who have gathered peaceful outside the Capitol building, in accordance with state law, have been targeted by the Walker administration. Singing, chanting, and drumming are all acts protected under America’s guarantee of freedom of speech for its citizens. However, a sneaky new law has been passed in Wisconsin requiring groups of twenty or more people to apply for a permit before engaging in constitutionally protected free speech activity in a public area.
Governor Scott Walker’s administration has attacked the salaries and benefits of public employees, as well as attacking social services, healthcare, and education. Now, Walker’s administration is attacking free speech and public assembly. These are two basic tenets of American Democracy. This is an outrage. Don’t let Wisconsin turned into a police state run by Walker and his cronies. Stand up against this erosion of free speech. Speak out against the unlawful arrests of protestors, and speak out against the manipulation of the law to suppress protest and crush dissent. Don’t let yourselves be defeated or intimidated.
