Commend Medical Association for Endorsing Marriage Equality

Target: Jeanne A. Conry, President of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists

Goal: Applaud the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists for supporting same-sex marriage

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recently voiced its support of marriage equality for same-sex couples. The group of medical professionals commended the Supreme Court’s recent DOMA decision that provides equal treatment for same-sex couples married in states where marriage equality is legal. The ACOG recognizes that extending marriage rights to the LGBT community is beneficial for women’s health.

The ACOG rightfully recognizes that financial security is tied inextricably to health care and the health of women and their families. According to the organization, marriage helps provide the financial security necessary to improving health care access, and all people should be able to obtain this financial security regardless of sexual orientation.

Studies also show that same-sex couples in states where their marriages can be legally recognized have lower levels of stress and lower incidences of mental health problems and substance abuse disorders when compared to same-sex couples in states lacking legal marriage recognition.

By supporting marriage equality and pointing to the urgency of this issue, the ACOG sends a clear message that it is committed to advocating for equality and justice for the LGBT community. Marriage equality is in the best interests of individuals and bears many benefits that improve quality of life. Applaud the association for vocally supporting marriage equality and sending a message to the rest of the medical world that this issue is important.

Dear Jeanne A. Conry,

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recently came forward with its official support for marriage equality. The association outlines the many health and benefits and other essential rights and access married couples receive that LGBT people should also be able to have.

In the fight for marriage equality, it is imperative that alliances form and institutions get involved. By supporting marriage rights for LGBT people, the ACOG is sending a message that it is an ally in efforts toward equality. I commend your association for taking these steps and encouraging the rest of the medical community to support the cause.

  1. Actually it is odd that so many gays want to marry..or anyone for that matter…with the divorce rate over fifty percent. The entire institution seems doomed.
