Target: Prabumulih Barat City Council
Goal: Prevent ‘virginity testing’ laws from being implemented, and remove the man who drafted the proposal from office
Head of the education office in the district of Prabumulih in Sumatra, Indonesia, Muhammad Rasyid has drafted plans and a proposed budget to carry forth with mandatory and unethical ‘virginity tests’ on all of their female high school seniors. We need to push the Prabumulih City Council to not allow this proposal to go any further, and to urge Muhammad Rasyid to step down as Head of Education, as he is surely unfit for the position for trying to carry out such an absurd policy.
Rasyid defended his plan to reporters stating that he knew it would receive criticism , but claimed the virginity tests would protect the female students from premarital sex and prostitution. These students need to be taught accurate sex education and proper ways of protecting themselves, not to have their bodies and privacy violated from these unethical tests designed simply to condemn them. The potential policy is discriminatory against females, ineffective as abstinence promoting sexual education, and also completely inaccurate, seeing as how the appearance of one’s lost virginity can be caused by a rupture to a female’s abdomen or from certain infections and diseases as well.
Fortunately, almost everyone is opposing this plan already. The Provincial Education Chief, the National Commission for Child Protection, in the capital Jakarta, Education Minister Muhammad Nuh, Nurul Arifin, a female legislator from the Golkar Party, as well as thousands of people on social media websites, have already made their oppositional statements regarding Rasyid’s outlandish approach. However, the fate of the policy still rests in the hand of the district council.
By signing the petition below, you will help prevent Muhammad Rasyid’s discriminatory and excessive proposal from going any further, and help urge the Prabumulih City Council to discharge Rasyid from his current position position as Head of Education.
Dear Marzuki Alie, Speaker of the People’s Representative Council,
I am writing to you today concerning the recent proposal of mandatory ‘virginity tests’ for all female high school seniors. The proposed policy is completely absurd and unethical. To pass legislation of that kind would be discriminatory toward women and a violation of their privacy in the most absolute sense. This unreasonable and excessive plan needs to stopped at once, and I urge you to help make this happen.
Muhammad Rasyid, the proponent of this ridiculous plan, suggests these virginity tests are an accurate and effective method to deter premarital sex and prevent prostitution, completely based off of condemnation and shame. Rasyid has stated he has already drafted a budget to carry forward with this proposal. Such idea coming from a Head of Education is downright unacceptable, and proves he is unfit for such position. Please, I urge you to remove Muhammad Rasyid from his position as Head of Education of the Prabumulih district, South Sumatra.
