Target: Thai Government
Goal: Legalize same-sex marriage
More and more countries have been progressing on LGBT issues lately. England was one of the most recent countries to legalize gay marriage, while Russia is regressive on its policy towards gay people. Asian countries have not been progressing as much as the rest of the world when it comes to LGBT issues. Out of all the countries, Thailand seems to be the most progressive about gay marriage.
Same-sex couples are still not allowed to marry in Thailand, but there is a chance gay marriage may be legalized. Civil partnerships in Thailand are supposed to become legal in a year for the LGBT community, and the new law will allow same-sex couples to have the same rights as straight couples.
Thailand has made itself a getaway country for gay couples because they are accepted there. Many gay people who come to Thailand do so because it is illegal to be gay in their home country or gay people have limited rights. It is more comfortable for them to be openly gay in Thailand due to Thai law.
If Thailand were to legalize gay marriage, it would become the first Asian country to do so. Current Thai law only recognizes marriage as between a man and a woman. Even though Thailand is a conservative country and many Thai people are opposed to marriage equality, gay marriage still has a chance of passing. Urge Thailand to legalize equality by signing the petition below.
Dear Thai Government,
It is only right that all people are able to marry who they choose to love, regardless of the gender of that person. Many countries are now able to see that, but your country still has not. Your government is conservative, but still more progressive than other Asian countries when it comes to LGBT issues.
Many gay people come to your country to escape their home country because they are oppressed in their home country. The fact that gay people feel comfortable in your country shows that your country is more progressive when it comes to human rights than many Asian countries in the same area. Your country is coming close to legalizing same-sex partnerships, which would give same-sex couples equal rights. Hopefully that bill will become law within the year.
You can become the first Asian country to legalize gay marriage and set an example for the other countries in Asia. It is time that all Thai people have the same rights regardless of their sexual orientation.
