Demand Justice For Slain Indian Activist

Narendra Dabholkar

Target: Members of India National Congress

Goal: Demand justice for slain Indian activist.

An Indian man named Narendra Dabholkar was a reputable doctor turned activist. At the age of 67, he was still devoted in helping others. He wanted to get rid of religious superstitions and black magic because it often would involve inhumane animal sacrifices and in some rare cases, human sacrifices. These practices are also ripe for exploitation and fraud by so called “god men”. They prey on the poor and uneducated by promising them miracle cures or other fixes for their ills in life in exchange for compensation. Indeed, this practice has become a growing and profitable business throughout India. It is malicious to manipulate and rob those who have very little. He advocated a law that would ban religious exploitation and fraudulent medical workers. Although opponents of the bill criticize the legislation as anti-religion, they are misinformed. Its goal is to stop an ugly and unregulated practice by con-men. He was also an opponent against other deep rooted oppressive Indian traditions as well. For example, he supported inter-caste marriages, which is considered taboo.

Dabholkar founded an organization known as the Maharashtra Blind Faith Eradication Committee, which embodied all of these goals. The organization educated people on the benefits of scientific knowledge, in hopes of combating fake “god men”, promoted social cooperation, and uplifting women from the consequences of oppressive religious beliefs. His activism earned him many enemies and countless death threats. Despite these dangers, the doctor had persisted for 18 years in his campaign. Unfortunately, he was recently assassinated by two unidentified armed men while he was taking his morning stroll. A colleague said that he received warnings of dire consequences if he did not drop his support for the proposed legislation prior to his slaying. It is clear he was killed by those who want to continue this cycle of manipulation and unwarranted reverence for fake “god men”.

Sign this petition to demand the India government to seek justice for Narendra Dabholkar.

Dear Members of India National Congress,

Mr Dabholkar committed his life to healing the ill and protecting the most vulnerable. His death is a great loss for the mission for a more progressive Indian society. These unregulated con-acts are an insult to religion. It is pure evil to manipulate and rob the impoverished of their meager possessions. Despite facing numerous death threats and deep rooted traditional resistances, the doctor persisted in his efforts without regard for his own life. Please bring the perpetrators to justice and help continue the late doctor’s life mission for a more harmonious and just Indian society through meaningful legislation.
