Demand Animal Shelter Serve Cruelty-Free Food

Animal Shelter still serves meat at fundraising events

Target: Sacramento County Animal Shelter

Goal: Serve cruelty-free products at all fundraising and shelter events

The Sacramento County Animal Shelter has several fundraising events each year in order to raise the much-needed funds required for the rescue and care of countless animals. Despite the shelter’s dedication to saving animals, it still continues to serve meat and animal-based food at shelter functions. This is not consistent with the County Shelter’s animal welfare motto and goals. Please demand that all animal shelter events include only cruelty-free menu options.

At the Sacramento County Animal Shelter, hundreds of animals are rescued and adopted out to loving homes every year. The shelter not only houses the usual cats and dogs, but aids any and all animals in need of help including horses, cows, pigs, goats, rabbits, chickens, and reptiles. Hundreds of volunteers spend countless hours and resources helping these innocent creatures gain a second chance at life. Fundraising events are frequently held in which people from the community will come to donate money and feast on food provided by the animal shelter’s caterer of choice.

Many volunteers, as well as those who support the shelter financially, find it morally incongruent for the animal shelter to be serving the tortured flesh of some of the same animal species they work so hard to save. How can an avid shelter supporter eat a bacon and cheese appetizer and still hold compassion for the pigs in the animal shelter barn? The volunteers are all part of a larger animal welfare group known by the name TEAM, which is stands for: Teaching Everyone Animals Matter. The TEAM motto represents all animals, not just puppies and kittens. How can we love one but eat the other?

It is inconsistent for animal advocates to eat the flesh of one animal while striving to save another. Please tell the Sacramento County Animal Shelter to be morally consistent and only offer cruelty-free foods at all shelter events.

Dear Sacramento County Animal Shelter Events Coordinator,

I was horrified to learn that the Sacramento County Animal Shelter continues to offer meat and animal-based food choices at fundraising events. This is morally inconsistent with the values and goals set forth by your very establishment. Please immediately declare all future events endorsed by the Sacramento County Animal Shelter to be exclusively cruelty-free.

The Sacramento County Animal Shelter saves hundreds of animals every year. Countless dedicated staff and volutneers work tirelessly in order to save animals of all types, not just cats and dogs but also horses, cows, goats, pigs, rabbits, chickens, and reptiles. Your volunteer base is centered around the moniker TEAM: Teaching Everyone Animals Matter. This motto refers to all animals, not just cats and dogs.

Please align the fundraising goals and public image of the Sacramento County Animal Shelter with the core beliefs and values it has set forth in its motto. Please offer only cruelty-free menu options at all future events sponsored or hosted by the Sacramento County Animal Shelter.

  1. When will humans begin to understand that all animals deserve our respect and care, not just the dogs & cats our country has deemed most worthy. We need to be kind to all, animals and other humans too!!!
