Target: Leaping Bunny Program
Goal: Show support to organization insisting on alternative product testing
Humane Society International estimates that up to 12,000 animals are used in a battery of more than fifty experiments in order for one household pesticide to be registered. Animals are subjected to tests that corrode their eyes and stunt their developmental and neurological systems. Standing up in defense of these tortured animals is the Leaping Bunny Program, committed to ending animal cruelty.
As part of the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC), Leaping Bunny places rigid restrictions on companies that carry their seal. In order to rank as part of the Leaping Bunny family, a company must pledge that no animal testing will occur in any part of their product development. This includes a promise from the company itself, its laboratories, and ingredient suppliers. Product manufacturers displaying the Leaping Bunny logo are also required to participate in on-site compliance audits. In turn, Leaping Bunny offers a 100 percent guarantee that companies certified with through them have met their standards.
Currently, neither the Food and Drug Administration, nor the Consumer Product Safety Commission require animal testing on personal care, household, or cosmetic products. An astonishingly large number of companies continue this practice out of sheer habit. Many companies claim to be “cruelty-free,” but are able to get around the true meaning of this labeling since there are no laws clearly defining the term. A company can legally advertise that they do not test on animals, but contract with a laboratory that does. Most testing occurs during the base level of ingredient phasing so as long as the finished product hasn’t been tested on animals, the company is in the clear.
The Leaping Bunny website offers a jackpot of participation options. Consumers and companies alike are invited to become a part of ending animal cruelty. Links to take action and donate are available, as well as individualized shopping guides that outline the companies who participate in the program, and the ones that do not. Animals are caged for life and mistreated unnecessarily to make sure that everything from eye shadow to shampoo make it to consumers. Buy products displaying the Leaping Bunny logo and support the work being done to stop the death sentence placed on laboratory animals.
