Target: Assemblyman Tim Donnelly
Goal: Condemn Tim Donnelly for taking his son out of school because of California’s new transgender law
California recently became the first state to pass a law protecting the rights of transgender students. The law allows transgender students to choose which bathroom they want to use and which sports team they want to join. It was passed in order to ensure equality and safety for the transgender community. Many people see this new law as controversial, when in fact it really should not be.
California Republican Assemblyman Tim Donnelly decided to take one of his sons out of school because of the new law. He is not a supporter of the law and clearly does not understand what it means to be transgender. Donnelly stated, “It’s as if our public schools have stopped being public schools and now they’re government indoctrination centers.” He cannot see that the government of California passed this law to protect students, not indoctrinate them.
The assemblyman’s ignorance to the law and to transgender students is quite clear. He is worried about the other students feeling uncomfortable, but shows no concern for the transgender students who feel uncomfortable at school every single day. Tim Donnelly’s statements about the law prove to Americans that when he should be in office to represent everyone’s interests, his prejudice towards the LGBT community only allows him to represent his own interests. Condemn the assemblyman for his narrow-minded views by signing the petition below.
Dear Assemblyman Tim Donnelly,
You cannot seem to see the good that will come out of this new transgender law in California. Many students will now feel safer and more comfortable because they are allowed to have access to bathrooms, locker rooms, and sports teams that match their gender identity. This bill will reduce bullying and remove some unnecessary stress out of the lives of transgender students.
You have made the decision to remove one of your sons from middle school because of the new law. Even though your son won’t be affected by the law, you decided that politics was more important and that you needed to prove a point. Well you have proven a point, which is that you have narrow-minded views.
You said that both of your sons were afraid of being in the restroom with someone who is genetically female. Do you ever stop to think of the fear that transgender students face every day when they go to school? They are targeted by bullies and often do not have support from faculty members or other students. Now, they have more to fear when they are not even supported by members of the government, like you.
