Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Thank the president for commitment to environmental initiatives by installing solar panels on the White House
Recently, the Obama administration announced that it is installing solar panels on the White House, fulfilling a promise made in 2010 that the president’s residence would commit to improving energy efficiency. The White House will not only be fitted with solar panels along the roof, but will also receive “other energy-saving equipment such as updated building controls and variable-speed fans,” according to a report by ABC News. All of the retrofitting is aimed at conserving energy and helping to set a precedent for businesses and individuals across the nation to follow.
The Obama administration’s construction of solar panels on the roof of the White House will actually mark the second time that solar energy has been used in the building. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter had 32 solar panels installed on the roof of the White House. These were later removed under the Reagan Administration during roof repair construction. However, much like when President Carter ordered the installation of solar panels, the recent addition to the White House is not only practical, but also largely symbolic. In 2010, when the Obama Administration’s plan to install solar panels was announced, then-Secretary of Energy Steven Chu expressed the administration’s hope to “lead by example.” At the time, Chu encouraged American’s to follow suit and install solar panels on their own homes and businesses. Furthermore, the White House’s current retrofit proves that even old buildings can be altered to include sustainable forms of energy such as solar power.
Thank President Obama for following through on his promise to install solar panels on the White House, and therefore setting an example for others to follow in the pursuit of sustainable energy.
Dear President Obama,
The recent construction on the White House to install solar panels on the roof, as well as fit the building with other energy-saving equipment is highly commendable. Not only will these changes help to improve energy efficiency and cut down on energy use in the White House, but they will also set an example for Americans to follow.
By encouraging energy efficiency you have proven your commitment to environmental policy. This is a concrete, physical change that has symbolic importance as well. As more and more Americans switch to sustainable energy, including solar power, we will be able to conserve more of the earth’s valuable resources.
Thank you for your commitment to sustainable energy, and for setting a precedent for Americans to follow.
