Target: Chris Christie, Governor of New Jersey
Goal: Ban military sniper rifles
New Jersey recently attempted to pass a bill that would ban military sniper rifles in the state, but it was vetoed at the last minute by the governor. The guns that would have been banned are extremely dangerous.
The proposed bill would have banned the use of the Barrett M82 and M107 sniper rifles. These guns use large six-inch bullets that can kill a human that is a mile and a half away from the shooter. The guns were designed specifically to be used against military helicopters and jets and can shoot through cars, body armor, and bullet-proof glass, demonstrating how powerful and dangerous the guns are meant to be.
Chris Christie, the governor of New Jersey, originally called for the ban against the Barrett .50 a few months ago, and it was because of this that the legislation was created. Because of this, it was very surprising that he chose to veto the bill banning the weapons. The governor indicated that he chose to veto the bill because instead of calling only for selling of the rifles to be banned, it also prohibited individuals who already own the rifles from keeping them.
Critics of Christie’s decision to veto the bill speculate that he did so because he plans to run as a presidential candidate in 2016 and was keeping that and pro-gun constituents in mind. This idea is reinforced as members of a pro-gun group in New Hampshire lobbied against the New Jersey bill, calling for Christie to stop it from passing. Because Christie vetoed the bill, these incredibly dangerous firearms are available for purchase in the state of New Jersey.
By signing the petition below you will be demanding that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie revoke his veto on this bill and legalize the ban on these assault rifles.
Dear Governor Christie,
The safety of those who live in New Jersey should be the highest priority of the state’s governor. It was made very clear after Hurricane Sandy that you, as governor, care deeply about your constituents and often make decisions that put the needs of New Jerseyans first. However, your most recent decision regarding military sniper rifles shows a lapse in judgment that could be detrimental to those living in your state.
I am writing you to demand that you lift your veto on the military sniper rifle ban. As you understood when you first called for the ban on these firearms, allowing civilians to own this type of gun is unreasonable and extremely dangerous. While the right to bear arms must be protected, this must be done within the context of the current society’s needs and practices, and because of this it is necessary that guns that can shoot through bullet-proof glass or body armor should not be owned by people who are not in the military. You must put the health and safety of the people of New Jersey first and enforce the ban on these weapons, or else you will be failing to provide for the people of your state.
