Protect Small Asian Mammal from Exploitative Coffee Production Process

Target: Producers of kopi luwak coffee in the Indonesian Archipelago

Goal: Stop the production of kopi luwak coffee, which exploits the Asian civet, a small cat-like animal

Asian palm civets, small cat-like cousins of the mongoose indigenous to Indonesia, are being exploited to make the world’s most expensive coffee. The coffee is created by extracting coffee beans fermented in the digestive tract of the civet that are then excreted, cleaned, and roasted.  Because of the time it takes and the limited number of civets in detention, the process is quite costly and makes the coffee  highly sought-after. Increased demand for this rare brew has encouraged producers to capture and force feed more civets, even types that do not include coffee berries in their diet naturally.

Although kopi luwak used to be made from the excrement of wild civets who ate the ripest coffee berries, producers realized that the rarity of the coffee was a marketing goldmine, and subsequently began factory farming civets. Now the civets are snatched from the wild and forced to endure awful conditions that are not unlike those faced by hens in battery cages. They are fed poor diets and confined to small cages, and despite their efforts to stay together, are separated from one another. Their trade for kopi luwak production is also contributing to a higher mortality rate and a threat to the civet population. To add insult to injury, many coffee enthusiasts and food critics find the brew to be quite unremarkable.

Kopi luwak coffee is unnecessarily putting the Asian Palm Civet in danger, simply for a mediocre beverage. Their conditions are inhumane. Let producers of civet coffee know that animal cruelty is too high a price to pay for a drink. Help stop the production of kopi luwak coffee by signing the petition below.

Dear Producers of Kopi Luwak,

The production of your kopi luwak coffee puts the Asian Palm Civet in danger. Your farming of civets is not only forcing inhumane conditions upon them, but is also depleting their population.

Capitalizing on animal cruelty is deplorable. Kopi luwak coffee is nothing more than a mediocre novelty beverage that does not demand the prices that you are asking. Stop exploiting civets for such an unexceptional drink before the novelty wears off. Save the civets and end the production of kopi luwac.
