Target: Darren Young

Goal: Applaud Darren Young for publicly coming out as gay

When you are a celebrity, keeping a private life can be difficult, especially when you are gay. Many celebrities have come out in recent years in an effort to show that being gay is no big deal. Darren Young, a professional wrestler, just came out as gay. While doing so, he became the first openly gay professional wrestler.

In an interview with TMZ, a news source, Young decided to come out as gay. World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc., or WWE, is one of the most prominent professional wrestling organizations, and now they have its first gay member. Young was interviewed at an airport, where he was asked if it would be possible to be successful and openly gay in the WWE. In response Young said, “Absolutely. Look at me. Ya know. I’m a WWE superstar and to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now, I’m gay. And I’m happy. I’m very happy.”

The cameraman was very shocked by Young’s response, and at first could not find the words to say. Then the cameraman commended Young for his courage and told him that he was honored Young shared this news with him. The WWE later made a comment about Young’s coming out, saying “[The] WWE is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and we will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar.”

Young should be commended for his bravery because it can be difficult to accept one’s own sexual orientation and for others to accept it as well. It is clear that Young has found pride in his sexual orientation, and he should be proud to share it. Commend Young for his bravery by signing the petition below.

Dear Darren Young,

As a WWE professional wrestler, the public expects you to maintain a manly persona and many people think that being gay takes away from that, when it really does not at all. In an unplanned interview with TMZ, you decided to come out as gay when you did not even have to. The question you were asked was not about your sexual orientation, but you still chose to be brave and authentic about your sexuality.

You also explained how it does not matter that you are gay because it does not affect your wrestling career at all. You should be treated the same as you were before you came out as gay, and hopefully you are.

It takes strength to come out as gay publicly, and you approached the situation with tremendous strength. You showed people that it is no big deal and you can still have a successful career regardless of your sexual orientation.
