Target: Ohio State Legislature
Goal: Protect a woman’s right to choose
Republican Ohio lawmakers recently announced that they will reintroduce a six-week abortion ban that will make it a felony for women to undergo the procedure once a fetal heartbeat can be detected. Often, women do not even realize that they are pregnant when a fetal heartbeat is detected. A similar measure was proposed last year and the state legislature considered it, but it was so controversial that its proponents in the legislature decided to drop it. This systematic attack on women’s reproductive healthcare throughout the United States must be stopped.
The new bill would require that women undergo a preliminary ultrasound, and if a fetal heart beat is detected then they would not be able to undergo the procedure. Moreover, to detect a heartbeat so early into pregnancy, doctors must perform an invasive transvaginal ultrasound. At the moment, only North Dakota has signed such a ban into law, but it is being challenged in North Dakota’s Supreme Court. The Texas state legislature has also recently proposed an almost identical measure that is currently being debated.
In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court made it legal for women to obtain an abortion in its ruling in the landmark case Roe v. Wade. In this ruling, the Supreme Court set the standard that women could not get an abortion after 24 weeks. This proposed ban would be the most severe in the country and it infringes on a woman’s right to choose as enshrined in the constitution. About 40 of Ohio’s 99 House members have agreed to co-sponsor the reformulated heartbeat measure despite the obstacles it had faced in the past. Proposed six-week abortion bans became increasingly popular in 2012 despite contradicting the Roe v. Wade decision.
Ohio anti-abortion activists and lawmakers have been quite busy this year enacting harsh abortion restrictions. These activists have lauded the state’s historic move to restrict access to abortions when a two-year budget was passed that included several stringent attacks on women’s reproductive rights. As a result, several clinics in Ohio have been forced to shut down. Please sign this petition to stop such extreme measures that eliminate a woman’s right to choose. The systematic attack on women’s reproductive rights by the GOP must be stopped now.
Dear Ohio State Legislature,
We condemn your continued and systematic attack on a woman’s right to choose in your state. The proposed six-week abortion ban, which criminalizes abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, directly contradicts the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in 1973 that legalized women’s access to abortion up to 24 weeks into pregnancy. If passed, this measure would be one of the most stringent abortion restrictions in the nation, and it is abhorrent that such an attack on a woman’s right to choose is occurring in 2013.
The war on women’s access to reproductive healthcare must be halted. Most women do not even know that they are pregnant six weeks into pregnancy when a fetal heartbeat can be detected. To find a fetal heartbeat, doctors must use invasive procedures. Stop taking away women’s autonomy over their own bodies and comply with the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision.
