Praise Congressman for Supporting Citizenship

Target: Representative Mark Amodei

Goal: Commend congressman for humane remarks about immigrants

Mark Amodei, a Republican Representative of Nevada, recently spoke out in favor or providing citizenship to immigrants. This statement was particularly surprising because of the very conservative and anti-immigration sentiments of his district in Nevada. Recently in an interview with the Reno Gazette Journal, Representative Mark Amodei stated that he did not think that a pathway to citizenship could be considered “amnesty” due to the large penalties and the fact that immigrants have to wait ten years before naturalization. Although Amodei supported immigration reform in the past, historically his viewpoint was very anti-immigrant, calling for legislation that would allow for states and towns to be immigrant officials or would allow for the deportation of undocumented youth.

His recent interview indicated a shift in view, as Amodei stated that he supported immigration reform through different types of legislation. Amodei called for an accelerated pathway to citizenship for undocumented youths, as well as citizenship given to undocumented immigrants after ten years of living in the United States if they are able to pass a criminal background check and speak English. Amodei’s change in heart may have stemmed from a recent media attack by the Service Employees International Union against his stance on immigration.

Although Amodei’s plan for immigration reform is far from ideal, the softening of his anti-immigration sentiments are commendable and can hopefully act as a stepping stone towards even more progressive and pro-immigrant policies in the future. By signing the petition below, you will be asking Representative Mark Amodei to continue supporting progressive immigration reform and easier pathways to citizenship.

Dear Representative Mark Amodei,

Immigrants in the United States face many hardships because of their background and the political systems that we have in place that often do not welcome foreign individuals into our country. It is incredibly difficult for undocumented immigrants to achieve citizenship, and immigration reform is absolutely necessary to adjust a corrupt system that is causing more harm than help to United States citizens.

I am writing you to praise you for your commitment to an adjusted pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, as well as your dedication to undocumented youth. It is through immigration reform that real, humane, policies will be created and it is important that the leaders of our country take a stand in favor of justice for all people, regardless of background. I hope that you will take an even stronger stance in favor of progressive immigration reform in the future.
