Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Commend President Obama’s environmentally friendly actions
The Obama Administration recently announced that they will be installing solar panels on the White House. This decision was part of a plan to make the White House more environmentally sound.
Obama will be the third president to preside over the installation of solar panels on the White House. Jimmy Carter put solar panels on the building in 1979, but they were removed by Ronald Reagan almost immediately after he gained the presidency in 1981. George W. Bush then put the panels back on the building, installing the a solar electric system at the White House. During his administration, 167 solar panels were installed, and since 2002 they have been providing hot water throughout the building and in the pool, as well as providing other forms of electricity to the White House.
President Obama originally announced that he would be putting more solar panels on the building in 2010, but it has taken three years for the action to actually take place. The original decision to install was in conduction with a campaign held by 350.org and a company that provides solar energy could Sungevity that asked world leaders to put solar panels on government buildings. The plan for the solar panels is still in conversation, but the administration hopes to prove that even older buildings can use solar energy. The panels that the Obama administration installs should pay for themselves in eight years.
As solar energy is proving to be a very efficient and inexpensive source of energy, the Obama administration’s decision to install these panels may prove to influence other governmental buildings and homeowners to use panels as an energy source.
By signing the petition below you will be supporting the Obama Administration in their efforts to preserve the environment.
Dear President Barack Obama,
Preserving the environment through energy efficiency is crucial at this time, as environmental concerns grow deeper. Making efforts to stop climate change and protect the environment is very important, and the United States government should act as a leader in the movement towards environmental sustainability.
I am writing you to praise you for your commitment to the environment through the use of energy-efficient solar panels on the White House. Taking this important step will influence many others into creating similar goals of sustainability, and hopefully soon this energy-efficient and cost-effective method will be used for electricity on houses and buildings all across the world. Thank you for your dedication to stopping climate change, and please continue to make thoughtful decisions in the future.
