Target: Sean Hannity
Goal: Condemn Sean Hannity for his misleading comments about California’s new transgender protections
Recently, California became the first state to put into law certain protections for transgender students. Governor Brown signed a bill that allowed for transgender students to choose which bathroom to use in schools and which sports team to play on. This is progress for transgender rights because it will reduce the amount of bullying in schools while allowing transgender students to feel more comfortable.
This bill has been made to be controversial by the media, even though nothing in the bill should be seen as controversial. One right wing news source has misrepresented what the bill really does, Fox News. Fox News has been covering the new California law and many news anchors have been very bias in their approach, making transphobic remarks.
On his news show Hannity, host Sean Hannity said “What do we do with the seven year-old girl that goes into the locker room and there’s the 14-year-old boy naked in the girls’ locker room because that’s where he chooses to be?” Sean Hannity obviously does not understand what it means to be transgender, because if he did he would never have said that.
The law is a positive step for America, and obviously Sean Hannity cannot see that. He cannot see past biological sex and that someone’s gender identity may not match their biological sex. His prejudice is evident in his comment about the law. Condemn Sean Hannity for his discriminative words by signing the petition below.
Dear Sean Hannity,
The new California bill is meant to ensure safety for transgender students. The bill helps to prevent bullying by allowing transgender students to use the restroom and play on the sports team of their choice. Many transgender students are already major targets of bullying, so this bill can help reduce it by allowing them to blend in with the crowd more.
Your comments about the law were misleading and bias. You are making this law out to be a controversial issue when really it should not be. It is simply about transgender student protections. If you really care so much about the safety of all students, you would be able to see how positive this bill is.
It is disappointing to say the least that people who are presenting the news to Americans cannot tell the truth. Instead, they try to convince people that transgender people are just mentally confused and do not deserve protections under the law. That is exactly what you just did.
