Commend New Jersey for Increasing Animal Cruelty Penalties

Target: New Jersey Governor Chris Christie

Goal: Applaud new legislation strengthening protection of animals from cruelty

The state of New Jersey has recently passed and signed a law to increase civil and criminal penalties for those who abuse or neglect animals. Patrick’s Law is named after a pit bull found barely alive the day before St. Patrick’s Day. The young dog was thrown down a garbage chute of an apartment building.

Patrick the pit bull was emaciated at a skeletal nineteen pounds. His owner had abandoned and starved him. He was so weak that he could not whimper or bark. Fortunately, he was nursed back to health by the compassionate staff of the veterinary hospital he was brought to. He has made full recovery and is fostered by the administrator of the vet hospital.

The deplorable treatment of this innocent dog inspired the new legislation in the state of New Jersey, which makes the failure to provide an animal with food, water, or other necessities a fourth degree crime. If an animal dies from neglect, the offense will be upped to a third degree crime. The law also increases fines to $1,000 to $3,000 for a first offense, and between $3,000 and $5,000 for a second offense.

Imposing stricter penalties against those who are found guilty of committing animal cruelty crimes is a significant step in the right direction toward a society that perpetuates less animal and human suffering. Those who cannot speak for themselves are vulnerable to mistreatment and deserve our utmost protection, compassion, and respect. Please sign this petition to commend New Jersey for not taking animal abuse lightly.

Dear Governor Chris Christie,

I would like to commend you for increasing your state’s protection of animals by signing Patrick’s Law. By imposing harsher criminal and civil penalties for inflicting unnecessary cruelty upon animals, you are sending the important message that animals have the right to humane treatment while in the care of humans and that abuse will not be tolerated by the state of New Jersey. Patrick’s Law has the potential to save countless animal lives by making owners think twice about mistreating their pets.

Patrick’s Law also honors the young pit bull which it is named after. His suffering is representative of the disturbing animal abuse atrocities that take place in a society lacking compassion. Appallingly, many animals are starved by negligent owners, inhumanely tied up, and callously disposed of, in addition to other deplorable actions. Many do not successfully recover in the hands of caring rescuers as Patrick has. Thank you for treating extreme animal neglect with seriousness. Please continue to lead the nation in deterring animal cruelty by increasing penalties for perpetrators of cruel acts.
