Target: Commissioner Charles Ramsey, Philadelphia Police Department
Goal: Condemn the Philadelphia Police Department for reinstating Lieutenant Jonathan Josay with back pay after he punched a woman in the face.
According to news outlet 6 ABC, the Philadelphia Police Department will be reinstating Lieutenant Jonathan Josay. Lieutenant Josay was caught on video “slugging a woman” whom he believed to have sprayed beer on police officers during Philadelphia’s Puerto Rican Day parade. He was overheard telling the woman “that’s what you get.” Commissioner Charles Ramsey initially fired Josay after reviewing the video, but the Fraternal Order of Police proceeded to appeal his dismissal after Josay was acquitted of assault charges in court. Lieutenant Josay was granted his job back after his arbitrator claimed that he was “trying to swat the beer bottle” out of the woman’s hand, and she fell trying to keep hold of it. The arbitrator claimed that the fall was what caused the woman a bloody lip, not a punch from the enraged lieutenant. The court ruled in Lieutenant Josay’s favor.
This is outrageous. This man should not being patrolling the streets of Philadelphia or anywhere. This man should not be able to carry a weapon. This man should not be in charge of keeping the peace or policing our streets when he can barely policy his own temper. This case sets a terrible and terrifying precedent wherein law enforcement officials can quite literally get away with violence. The Fraternal Order of Police should have condemned the actions of Lieutenant Josay rather than endorsing them. Commissioner Charles Ramsey has stated that he is “disappointed” with the court’s decision, but that he “has to accept it.” He may have to, but we don’t. Tell Commissioner Ramsey to fight the court’s decision. Ramsey must file a grievance or an appeal, and at the very least he must remand Lieutenant Josay to desk duty in the interim so that this dangerous man cannot continue to inflict violence upon the citizens of Philadelphia.
Dear Commissioner Ramsey,
You claim to be “disappointed” over the court’s ruling that Lieutenant Jonathan Josay must be reinstated with back pay after committing an act of violence against a woman. However, in the same breath, you claim that you must “accept” it. Well, Commissioner, we believe that you must not accept it. You must not accept police brutality, you must not accept violence against women, and you must not accept corruption and cronyism in your precinct. You watched with your own eyes the video of Lieutenant Josay punching a woman in the face so hard that her mouth began to bleed. You were so appalled by what you saw that you rightly relieved Lieutenant Josay of duty. Why then are you so complacent now?
You must fight this ruling. You must appeal the court, you must file a grievance, you must abide by your oath to protect and serve the citizens of Philadelphia. Lieutenant Josay is a public menace and a violent threat. Giving this man a loaded gun and allowing him to patrol the streets is an act of terrorism. At the very least, you must remand Lieutenant Josay to desk duty if he indeed is reinstated. Fight this unjust ruling, Commissioner Ramsey. Stand with the citizens of the City of Brotherly Love. Don’t let a menace like Jonathan Josay loose upon your city’s streets.
