Target: Federal Judge Shira A. Sheindlin
Goal: Commend judge for ruling against racist law enforcement policy “Stop and Frisk”
Recently, Federal Judge Shira A. Sheindlin ruled that the law enforcement policy called “Stop and Frisk,” a policy wherein police officers in New York City have the right to stop and frisk any persons that they personally deem suspicious, to be in violation of civilians’ rights. The policy causes police officers to overwhelmingly target young minority men as a result of structural, ingrained societal racism. Judge Sheindlin rightly decided that the New York Police Department had “adopted a policy of indirect racial profiling” as a result of the policy.
The program, instituted by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, is a flagrant violation of Fourth Amendment rights, which guarantee protection against unreasonable search and seizure. Young minority men all over the city are harassed constantly under stop-and-frisk, a further violation of our Fourteenth Amendment rights, which guarantee equal protection under the law.
Judge Sheindlin was ruthless in her condemnation of the law and even went after the police officers and lieutenants who were willfully ignorant of the blatant discrimination being perpetuated against the residents of New York City, some of whom even purposefully and pointedly participated in the duplicity of the program. She demanded sweeping reforms of the entire law enforcement procedure, including the institution of a program that will require police officers to wear body cameras to record their actions—a direct departure from many law enforcers’ demands that recording their actions be made illegal.
Please sign this petition to commend Judge Sheindlin for her excellent service to the residents of New York City and the citizens of the United States as a whole. Her work to reform the racist stop-and-frisk program is a vital step in the right direction.
Dear Judge Shira A. Sheindlin,
I want to personally thank you for your efforts to reform the stop-and-frisk program. It has been a vehicle for systematic, institutionalized racial profiling for far too long, and it is about time we put an end to the harassment young men and women of color in New York City.
No less than the constitutional rights of American citizens were at stake, and I commend you for stepping up to the plate and working to correct this egregious wrong. Unfortunately, we need to keep a sharp eye on the police officers who have such authority over us, and your reforms are beginning to make that possible. Please continue the good work!
