Target: LA County Sheriff Leroy D. Baca
Goal: Demand justice for man arrested without cause
On Monday, August 5, 2013, a young African American man coming home from a rehearsal for Romeo and Juliet at the Downtown Repertory Theatre Company of Los Angeles was followed by a creeping cop car, frisked for evidence, arrested on trumped-up charges and detained for two days with no prisoner’s receipt of the date, time of arrest or the name of the arresting officer.
The officers further humiliated him by taking him to a Burger King parking lot for questioning, essentially kidnapping him by abuse of their authority. They then paraded him in front of his neighbors, asking if they recognized him, and dragged him home to harass his grandmother, frightening her by telling her that he was in “big trouble” before taking him away again to be detained for days.
This entire incident is far and away beyond the type of professionalism expected of police officers across this country. The behavior of these officers is a direct result of the institutionalized racism that runs rampant in our justice system through programs such as “Stop and Frisk” in New York City and similar attitudes towards African American men ingrained in authorities across America. It is unacceptable, and we must give individualized attention to stories such as these to shed light on the ways this structural, institutionalized racism affects the lives of individual American citizens throughout the nation.
Please sign this petition to hold these officers accountable for their actions and to persuade law enforcers across the United States to change their attitudes and protocol towards men and woman of color.
Dear Sheriff Leroy D. Baca,
Recently, a young African American man named Brandon was walking home from a rehearsal for Romeo and Juliet at the Downtown Repertory Theatre Company when he was stopped, frisked, wrongfully arrested, and detained for two days. The charges against him have since been categorized fluidly, and he never received a prisoner’s receipt that might detail exactly why he was detained away from his friends and family for days.
Furthermore, the police officers involved were incredibly unprofessional, driving him around to a Burger King parking lot and harassing his neighbors and grandmother. This is a classic case of racial profiling, and I demand that you put an end to your racist protocol immediately and discipline the officers involved. This behavior is unacceptable, and it will not be tolerated any longer.
