Target: Mike Huckabee, former Arkansas Governor and host of The Mike Huckabee Show
Goal: Apologize for calling Muslims “uncorked animals” on radio show.
Mike Huckabee, radio and Fox News host took time out on his syndicated program “The Mike Huckabee Show” to discuss his thoughts on the recent closing of several U.S. embassies in Africa and the Middle East due to threats from militant groups including al-Qaida. He used it as a springboard to state his feelings on how followers of an entire religion act like “uncorked animals.”
Noting the timing of the threats came at the end of the holy month of Ramadan, Huckabee stated that Islam “promotes the most murderous mayhem on the planet in their so-called ‘holiest days.’” He further said that “You know if you’ve kept up with the Middle East, you know that the most likely time to have an uprising on the day of prayer on Friday. So the Muslims will go to the mosque…and they come out of there like uncorked animals-throwing rocks and burning cars.”
Huckabee’s comment dumbs down uprisings in the Islamic world by ignoring their root causes, as well as why Friday is used as a day of protest mobilization. ThinkProgress notes “Huckabee was partially correct in noting…the large number of protests throughout the Middle East timed to take place on Fridays.” However, this is due both to the fact that people are off from work and congregated en masse, making it easier to rally. Protesters in countries as part of the Arab Spring took to the streets to demand positive change in their societies, including an end to dictatorship. The current protests in Egypt, for example, include both Muslim Brotherhood demonstrators protesting the overthrow of former President Mohamed Morsi by the military, as well as secular ones supporting the current government in the country.
Huckabee’s comments, however, are par for the course for a man who has uttered Islamophobic statements such as calling churches that give Muslims rooms to pray in “infidels who should essentially be obliterated.” By signing this petition, you will demand that Mike Huckabee apologize for his ignorant comments.
Dear Governor Huckabee,
Recently, you attracted significant controversy for a statement you made about the closings of U.S. embassies in the Middle East and Africa due to terror threats. You stated Islam “promotes the most murderous mayhem on the planet in its so-called ‘holiest days’” and, furthermore, that Muslim believers “come out of there like uncorked animals-throwing rocks and burning cars” after Friday prayer.
Rhetoric such as this, in addition to calling believers of an entire religion “animals” who are prone to random violence, blatantly ignores the root causes of recent protests in the Middle East. Friday is used as a day of demonstrations in this part of the world because both because it is a weekend day as well due to the fact as that people are congregated in a small number of locations, i.e. mosques. Like in any other part of the world, the reasons people march have to do with a variety of causes and not simple religious fanaticism. The Arab Spring protests, for example, were and are about people demanding democratic reforms an end to dictatorship. The current demonstrations in Egypt involve both Muslim Brotherhood members protesting the overthrow of former President Morsi as well as secular groups supporting the current government in the country.
Such statements may be expected from you because of earlier ones you gave like in 2011 when you called churches that give Muslims rooms to pray in “infidels who should essentially be obliterated.” However, that does not make them right. I ask that you apologize for your recent comments calling Muslim believers “uncorked animals.”
